Goldquest SS Question???

Thinking of getting a PI detector. Whites PI PRO or possibly the Goldquest SS. They are not far apart in price but I'm told that the Goldquest SS is a real "slow sweep" detector and that it can't be rushed. The Whites; on the other hand will detect well in slow or fast sweep speeds. Anyone use both of these or really knows the differences? Thanx.

And yes, the Whites Pro can be swept very fast and easier to use. The GQ needs to be swept slow, low and even if you are operating in black sand beaches.
But if its gold you want, I have seen the GQ do wonders. Right, Mark! I havent found gold with my GQ yet, but I guess thats because I got it during winter and I am surrounded by at least 4 other GQ users where I hunt.
HH,
JT

On land, I can sweep as fast as a metre per second, and not miss targets...how do I know this????
I've buried several targets, some deep, some shallow, in an arc about 7 feet wide, and then swept across them at high speed. Clear, separate signals are easily heard over all targets. I found it almost impossible to sweep so fast that signals blended into the next one, unless the targets were placed quite close together.

I have only used the GQ in the PI detector catagory, and I use my normal sweep speed not too slow nor too fast and been fairly successful with it here in southern Cal as Bing knows I have found gold rings and just last week a 14kt gold bracelet. HH

Thanks Eric for the pulse rate sweep speed,
I'm able to sweep my GQ fast here in Ca, Whites Pi's can sweep fast as well but don't get near the same depth as the GQ.
In fact! I keep e-mailing Frank and Terry Crenshaw how well my GQ does here in California every trip to the beach, Everytime I switch detectors I keep going back to the GQ.
Completed a recent depth test using a buried nickel.
GoldQuest with 11" coil..................12 to 13" inches
Goldquest with 10.5" center mounted coil.11" to 12" inches
Headhunter pi with 10.5 center mounted coil..11" inches
Waterproof Sovereign with 10" inch coil..11" inches using all-metal feature "Non-Pi machine with BBS tech"
Whites Pi pro with stock coil.............9" inches
All of the detectors used in the depth test the GQ operated the smoothest.
Now the detectors used have been set to operate under our difficult Ca. conditions, So with the settings used for California they may change for other parts of our country. Which means the results may change from one area to another. We have tough soil conditions here in Ca. We can't operate our detectors as high as others do back east.

Sometimes I get to writing and forget to mention certain important things about my detectors, In no way would I want to mislead someone into thinking certain machines perform the same.
Certain areas in our nation "ground/soil conditions" will differ from one area to another, In some cases extreamly different. In my case, My Headhunter Pi unit's are modified as well as my GoldQuest to handle California's extreamly bad soil.
Sorry if I caused confusion and just wanted to be honest here.
Thanks and good hunting,
Paul (Ca)

I expressed my opinion that the Whites PI can be swept "faster" because in my experience sweeping it fast (2-3 sweeps per second) and walking fast provided a stable threshold and fast ground coverage.
As for using the GQ in Southern California, a sweep speed of 0.5-1 per second and a slow walking pace is required for a relatively stable threshold at 10-15us.
If you have seen the Whites marketing DVD, youll know what I mean about fast sweeping.
This is in my experience. It has nothing to do with the weight. Speeding up SAT helps little. The way the coil is attached to the rod may have something (but not entirely) to do with it. The Whites has the rod attached near the center of the coil. The GQ has the rod at one edge of the coil. The GQ coil and rod set-up needs more care to keep level with the ground vs the Whites.

What do you mean some units "modified to handle CA's bad soil"? I may have missed this explanation in some of your earlier posts, if so, sorry.

Hello Gary,
Not all areas of our nation are the best places to hunt, Some areas make detecting difficult regardless of the machine. Here in California some areas are not the best. Most machines coming out of the factory will operate well with some minor adjustment "Sat & delay" for the unit to perform reasonably at most locations, For some areas the unit may need more to help it operate decent. That's were some mods are needed to help the unit perform well in those areas, If the user can apply these mods to his/her detector then unit should operate a little better than before. However, Sometimes when you change the machine to perform well under difficult conditions it will not get maximum deep as before when searching areas that had been friendly to the machine. So! You lose it here and gain it there or vice-versa, Depends what kind of hunting a user wants to do. And kiss the warranty goodbye once you touch the circuit board.
To be honest, I'm not the brightest light bulb in the room. I ask questions from friends and people who know and then apply what I've learned to my detectors. Some ideas are my own and are working well, It's a mater of how much you're willing to push your detector with the expense of maybe ruining the circuit board.
In the Headhunter Pi's case, I did some minor changes to help it operate well in certain areas of California.. Like other detectors, the stock HH PI will operate well in most areas sometimes needing to use the delay a little which is normal for most Pi's.
The mods to my HH Pi's are as follows,
One unit has a faster sat speed to operate when the soil gets tough and is fitted with a special 10.5" center mounted 15 usec coil made by Eric Foster.....
The other has the stock 11" coil and the sat speed in increased as well.
The third is actually a unit I put together from the ground up, It's from this unit I was able to do all testing to learn how to help the HH PI operate in the worst areas which I can now apply to other Pi detectors as well. This unit operates with a stock HH Pi 11" coil, 11" DD GQ coil, both 8" and 11" GQ coil or a mini probe to be used as a probe detector. It also has the SAT speed increased and the DD Mod Reg mentioned on his post above.
The HH PI is a great deep seeking pulse machine, One of the deepest pi detectors on the market.
HH, Paul (Ca)
