Goldquest SS V.2 with side photo of ground filter switch. User adjustable ground filter to aid in detecting over tough ground.
Bottom photo, belt mount Goldquest SS package with 3 section travel rod's.
Unit now comes ready to accept DD coils.

11" mono loop is standard. 8" optional. It can use Minelab SD & GP loops.

If you get into an area that's heavy mineralized, and you can't get the unit to run smooth, switch over to #2 filter, and adjust from that position to handle the ground.
When you put it in the #2 position it turns on an additional circuit that can be adjusted with the SAT control.

The variable SAT (Self Adjusting Threshold) that has been incorporated in the Goldquest SS for some time, has proved to be a valuable feature. Basically it is a variable one pole high pass filter consisting of a capacitor in series with the dc signal line from the output of the integrator, into the final dc amplifier. By varying the resistor on the amplifier side of the capacitor, the time constant, and hence the frequency at which the filter starts rolling off, can be varied. This has the effect that variations in background signal that are caused by changes in ground mineralisation can be reduced. These changes, as the coil is swept from side to side, are relatively slow compared to the rapid change that a ring or coin causes. A high pass filter reduces the low frequency signals, and passes the more rapidly changing ones; hence the name. The frequency at which the filter starts to work can be changed either by altering the capacitor value, or the resistor value. It is much easier to change the resistor value, and even to make it continuously variable, as is done in the SS. There comes a point, however, where the low value of resistor that is needed to give a fast SAT to cope with severe ground mineralisation, starts to reduce the wanted signal also. This can be overcome by a second, similar, filter following the first one. In electronic terms, this is referred to as a two pole filter. This allows higher value resistors to be used, while giving a sharper roll-off of the unwanted low frequency signals and maintaining the target signal amplitude.
On the Goldquest SS a two position toggle switch has been fitted to control this filter in conjunction with the variable SAT control. For most searching on the beach, position 1 will suffice, with the coil being swept at 0.5 – 1m per second. For beaches where the salinity content is higher and there are magnetic minerals in the sand, then position 2 may give better results, with the coil now being swept at 1 – 1.5m per second. The higher coil sweep speed is to prevent deep metallic targets tuning out in the course of the sweep.
Because of its good sensitivity to small gold, Goldquests are also being used for gold nugget hunting in inland areas, and the two position filter can be valuable in this situation, where the ground often contains iron minerals. This, together with the ability to use DD coils to further reduce ground effect, makes the Goldquest SS a valuable tool in this application.
Eric.
