Goldquest ss

Check with Mr. Bill on this forum.

I am told that you can build one...
I had one that a very respected person made and it worked very well...that was a while back...I won't metion the name...he will respond if it suits him.

I have seen a waterproofed Goldquest SS (it was inside a surfmaster case) that used a Coiltek Platypus (for the Minelab SD/GP/GPX Machines). I don't know how it worked but apparently he used it a lot. I also don't know if he was using the DD or the Mono version. If you search back far enough you could probably find it. If I can get my other computer online I will post the link. The Platypus is a neat coil (I had a Mono for my Minelab GPX-4000) because it is a nice size and it is waterproof. Make sure you don't get the one for the Sovereign or the Explorer.

Other Minelab/Coiltek/NuggetFinder Coils Might be compatible. The only other WATERPROOF coil from these manufacturers was the old Coiltek "Dingo" Round 19" DD Coil, which is hard to come by and most people hated it anyway.

Another option may be the Aftermarket TDI Coils. These MIGHT work (both machines run at 10us), but i'm not sure. An original coil would be very hard to come by.

Check with Mr. Bill to make sure a Minelab coil will work with your version of the Goldquest. Also, you may need an adapter.

You use the Minelab DD coil but have to adapt the detector by cutting a trace, adding a 5 pin connector to the SS and then changing the connector on the original mono coil to suit. Plus doing a mod in that connector (I think).

You really need to ask Reg on this forum. There's also a question about the watertightness of the Minelab coil if your tempted to use the DD on the beach.

Hi Jim,

Some versions of the GQ SS are already modified so they can use a DD coil. Some also have a second filter which also helps with ground signals.

The down side is most GQ models and I suspect even yours requires the standard connector normally used by Eric. So, if that is the case with your detector, you have two choices, have an adapter made or replace your connector with one used by the TDI and ML's. This is a simple 5 pin connector commonly used on CB mic's.

Replacing the connector is almost direct replacement except the connector used by Eric is slightly larger than the 5 pin. For best results, one could use a spacer or modify the housing slightly. One can also get away with simply installing the 5 pin connector realizing it will not fit perfectly. In any case, once the connector is changed, then any TDI compatible coil can be used.

You can look inside at your connector. It will have 3 pins. If wiring goes to all three, most likely the board is already modified so all you have to do is to replace the connector and wire the 5 pin connector properly.

Hi, Reg
I had my GQ SS modified by Mr Bill so I could use a DD coil.
He though he had one but it turned out to be a mono coil.
How would I go about makeing a adapter?
What coils would work?
Thanks
Jim
