Goldscan 5 and Coiltek "salt" coils

New member
I have a Goldscan 5 detector (not a 5b or 5c). Will the Coiltek salt coils work with this detector?
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

I have not personally tried one, but I would expect the salt coils would work just fine. I have tried other Coiltek coils and all that I have tried have worked ok.

Thanks Reg,

I recall reading somewhere that early version Nugget Finder coils work fine on the GS5, but the later coils (XP coils??) don't. I have a couple of early Nugget Finder coils that do work fine and I have a Coiltek Platypus DD coil that works great on the GS5. Just wasn't sure if there's anything different about the salt coils that would cause problems.

At one point they started winding the coils out of phase from the standard winding way. These coils do not work on the Goldscan. The Nugget Finder one's like this use to have a toggle switch on it to switch it in or out. They removed the switch, but the coil is still wound out of whack for the Goldscan. I do believe all the later NF coils are wound this way now. One would have to try a new NF coil, and see if they work. This would also hold true using them on the Whites TDI.

Hi Mike,

I think that if you try the salt coils, you may find that you will not need any ground balance at all. So, you might try turning off the GB and see what happens. If you can run this way, you will increase your depth capabilities but lose any form of tone change and will only have a high tone. I have built a few "salt coils" and operated them this way. With the GB off, I gain back some of the signal that is lost as the result of the winding technique.
