Good cheap large backpack for Explorer?

BlackX

New member
Anyone have any recommendations for a cheap backpack that would fit an Explorer broken down (perhaps only into 2 pieces (it's almost 35" from the end of the battery compartment to the end of the upper rod, which would be a really big backpack--but I dislike disassembling it at the control box)))? I've tried a Wal-Mart and K-Mart but didn't find anything big enough. (Picked up one that almost fits when broken down into 3 pieces and managed to split a seam right away--and that was without even zipping it shut completely.)

I was thinking perhaps one of the modern tall backpacks but suspect it would be hard to find one big enough that wasn't too expensive. (Walked into EMS the other day and the prices of anything that looked like it might work were astronomical.)

you might try the army surplus store if you have one close by

Just wondering what everyone uses if they're packing their Explorer off the beaten paths?

Been digging around the surplus places and it looks like I can find some backpacks that will hold it broken down into 3 pieces for about $30-35 and cheap multi-day treking packs that might hold it in 2 pieces for almost double that. (Never mind the good packs that, even used, cost over a hundred.) But I don't particularly want to spend that much if I can help it.

i got a North Face "Jester" pack at a sporting goods store (camping section); it has a bungee-type lace-up thingie that will hold the detector on the outside (separated at the upper & lower rods), and you can fill the pack with your belt & tools, extra clothes and a snack or whatever. $50 cheap.

Go to a thrift store and pick up a back pack cheap ( 1 or 2 bucks ).You can sew Velcro strips onto it to hold your detector.

I have a fannie pack that goes all the way aroud with a big pouch in the back for water and munchies. One side has two zipper pockets, one large and one for coins. The other side has one large for relics. None of them get in the way of detecting and all have zippers. Knowing me, I didn't pay much either.
