Good Day / Bad Day

Hi All!

Weather here in Mass was strange and interesting today - sunny and beautiful one minute, dark and rainy the next, then sunny, cold and windy a few minutes after that. My day of hunting took on the same highs and lows.

Managed to sneak out to an old local park between the rain and snow storms, and was going along having found just a 1948 Rosie. Then while digging a target along a sidewalk (1918 wheat), a noise startles me- it's a police car driving right into the park where I am- surprising because this park has car access on one side only and that is from a street that if you didn't know it was there, you'd never, ever find it. Anyway, he justs asks how I'm doing and heads off. The bad news of my title happened right there, as I noticed my X-1 probe was malfunctioning- chirping all over the place when it should have been quiet. A closer look showed some cracked outer wire covering and what appears to be a broken wire or two inside- Damn! Sunray will be getting it back as soon as I speak to them tomorrow.

Now the good news. After noticing the X-1 issue and not finding too much, I figured I'd hunt in a back to the car direction. Got a nice sounding silver signal, but without my probe I had to be extra careful. Pull out a plug and then a handful of dirt and I see a silver edge- pull it out- nice 1907-O Barber quarter! Not long after, another solid silver hit, 6 inches or so. Pull a plug and a couple of handfuls of dirt and I see silver again- even bigger- 1944 Walking Liberty half, and not 1 foot from the half, another silver hit- 1939 Washington quarter.

Those 3 took some of the sting off my X-1 situation, but it's so strange not having it. I even unsnapped it a couple of times to use it- force of habit.

Enjoy the pic and HH all.

Nice finds, Jeff! Glad it worked out even w/o the probe. I'm still waiting for my first half.

The probe on my Sov is a bit problematic too--cuts out--but if I bump it a little, it settles down. Luckily for me, it's just the connector cable, so I can just replace that. It's way too **** short anyhow for anything other than a standard installation, so I'll buy or build something longer eventually.

Roughly where in MA are you? I'm in 'burb WNW of Boston and we had flurries today. It was interesting weather! The kids and I walked out for brunch and it was feeling like a serious snowstorm, then sat down in the restaurant and by the time we'd ordered it was bright sun out. As you say. strange weather.

Nice going Jeff.
It's good to be out anytime you can grab hunting time I guess,
I shot down to a local tot lot the other day, and only came home with a 50cent piece, and a small piece of aluminum...
Still enjoyed it though, you did considerably better !!!

any time silver is involved it turns a bad day into a GREAT day....good finds man

Congrats on the silver Jeff.
Your lucky you can dig. I'm in SW NH and ground is rock solid.
Do you think the cable cover cracked because of the cold??

At how the high dollar probes we invest in have issues like broken wires, etc. They might say "they take a beating out in the woods" but can any of you ever remember the cord on your home phone breaking after YEARS of overstretching, yanking it out of your brothers hand, dropping, twisting etc? I can't. Same goes for detector coil wires, maybe they need to take a look at 21st century technology with regard to the quality of wire available.

The nice thing about my Sov probe was that it had the little coily--like on old style phone--pig-tail bit on the end of it. That cord still works fine and I tend to be rough on my gear.
I miss having that stress relief--as well as a bit less cord to get in the way--on the X-1 probe. At least, on the Explorer, having the switchbox mounted on the upper rod with the cord internal keeps it safe.

The big silver has to be the best - love to find that stuff. One big silver is worth easily 4 to 5 mercs.
How deep was the walker and the barber?
