I never noticed metal detectorists until i started metal detecting a week ago.Me and a few friends were hanging around the swings sets messing around when we see this metal detectorist walk up to us and asked if we had any thing better to do and i said no and go on your way to finding black beards treasure and have a good day.He said we should be at home playing one of those game machines and walked away and started detecting the ball field. So we thought it be fun to send a differnt kid up to him every five minutes asking him if he found any gold rings yet, after 2 hours and the 20th kid the grumpy old man packed it in and when he drove pass he yelled out the window you no good a-holes in front of mothers and kids,it was the funniest thing i ever seen and one mother was so upset she almost called the cops on this old guy! and now ill be detecting his spot because he cant go back!

Yeh, that's really being a man and teaching the kids how to get along in this world with others.
What A GREAT EXAMPLE.
You wouldn't last very long in my world.

One thing you'll have to learn quick in this hobby is that greed will ruin it for you. As years go on I grew out of that and enjoy hunting and sharing my spots with fellow hunters just for the company more than what I find. Also, that man doesn't represent most of us. I'd never ask a kid if he could move so I could detect a spot. In fact, I stay clear of all people in public places while hunting and if too many people show up or kids start hanging over my shoulder I just leave. Just not worth losing a spot if somebody gets tweaked off.

general rule of thumb--playgrounds are built for children....i.hunt them when kids arent around..... if parents or kids come to use the equiptment i casually move on....

Hi turdles, You are getting some good advice here from some folks so I will wii give you some more,"good advice",from this "old man". Turning 18 does not necessarily make you a man, and messing with old men is a good way to possibly not make it to 18. Or even 17. Your "funny encounter" old man first approached you as an Angry old man, and because of you, he left an even more angry old man.If you live long enough to become a "man",let's all hope for your sake that you realize that was not the smart thing for you to do.Angry old men , as well as young ones, can, and will sometimes do you serious harm.HH, Charlie

I agree with Charlie here. I will also add that when you show respect you will get respect. Hopefully you will learn this lesson sooner rather than later.
Best of luck in your decision(s). - Jim

Turdles, just because someone is being a jerk doesn't make it okay for you to go out of your way to be a bigger jerk. The "old man" went away and left you to do your thing. Then you and your friends intentionally annoyed and interrupted him for 2 hours. You should have left him alone to detect in peace. It doesn't hurt to be courteous even when someone else is not.

You and your friends are lucky that he only yelled at you.

Good luck metal detecting. Happy hunting.

If you don't know how a man should behave at 16 I have serious doubts that you'll know it at 18. Until you decide to behave like a real man behaves and show courtesy and respect to others you'll never be a real man whether you're 14 or 50.

Turdles, You're messing with someone who probably has more problems and stresses in life than you. You may run across an old timer that croses the line of self control....that can get ugly fast.

When I was young lad I had an incident with a truck driver, me with a snowball. That ole boy grabbed me by my coat collar and was ready to beat my face in, I could see it in his eyes as he drew back his fist. Lucky for me he caught himself and came to his senses.... some won't.....man was he angry.

Some day you could be an old man, out in the park trying to do a little detecting and some young kid could mess up your day. I have had people bother me to the point I just had pack it in. Most days if I am in the park I will have several people stop me and ask all kinds of questions. But for the most part that doesn't bother me, and they move on.

That old guy my not have a lot of days left to metal detect and you just messed up one of them.

Wasn't a bit funny, use your head, that was a real person with feelings just like you.

Please try to do better next time.

Thanks,

Ron in WV
