I have a co-worker who is thinking about buying metal detectors for her two sons, ages 9 and 11. I know there are a lot of machines you can pick up at Wal-Mart (or likewise) in the $70 range, but I hate to suggest those. She is looking around $100 apiece, so I was considering the Ace 150. I would consider that a real detector versus the cheaper aforementioned machines. Is there a machine that is comparable to that in the $100 range? I've found a listing on eBay at $123.95 for a new Ace 150. Any dealers out there that can help me get her boys into the hobby a little closer to $100 each on two machines? Thanks in advance for advice or offers.

If a display is not needed I would check out a Tesoro Compadre, great detector.

Ana's club here in ky had bounty hunter quick drawII for 99 right now. They are pretty good. I had a sharpshooter which is amlmost the same just some different features.

Superb advice. The Compadre is the easiest detector to learn to use for young and old. Set the discrimination knob to discriminate out pull tabs, show them how to pinpoint and turn them loose. It doesn't get any easier than that. Besides the Compadre being easy to learn, it's not a toy (beginner detector) and can hang with the big boys. The more knowledge a person has about detectors, the more likely they'll get a Compadre for their first detector.

Hobby Lobby has the bounty hunter tracker IV for about $75 brand new shipped to your door using their 40% off coupon that is always on their site. Good Luck

I've played with the Tracker IV. That's a steal for under $100. I think the discrimination on those works better than the similar BH machines with the digital screens. It's beep dig and it's fun.

Hi Roger,
Yeah, it would be important to keep the cost down for kids in that age range. Many don't stick with the hobby very long. The cool thing about metal detectors is that with a little time a person can upgrade themselves with their finds if they really catch the bug. A metal detector also goes along well with coin collecting and is a good way to kick off that little endeavor, too.

All the ones previsously mentioned are good but you can't buy a new Compadre or ACE for under a $100 dollars and the Tracker IV is a little bulky for a child.

Dave J. has spoken a few times about how good the circuit is in the Bounty Hunter Jr. He isn't the type to blow smoke so if he says the little thing is good, it means it IS good. That would be a good unit for kids that age and you can find them for around $50 if you shop around. I see Target offering them for $43 and change with free shipping online.

So my recomendation would be to check out the Bounty Hunter Jr.

We have a BH jr and it is a great little detector. I feel I should point out though that it does not have a headphone jack. Using 2 at the same time would probably be difficult, hearing each others beeps. Other than that I really like it.

I really appreciate all of the advice, and I completely agree with trying to keep cost down until you know if they'll stick with it. My original thought was to suggest a machine that was more than just a toy, something they could use up into their teens. But I know how my own kids were with sticking to something. All advice is welcome and appreciated.

get a bh jr and tracker 4 from hobby lobby. two transactions 40% off each. then buy them $80 of other stuff with money left over.
