:usaflag:what is a good solution to clean dirty coins ?? i tried vinager and salt but it killed one of my wheat pennies
??????????????????????

I use a concentrated cleaner, a dash of laundry or dish soap, and a bit of water. Steel BB's work well in place of gravel.

Yeah, vinegar and salt, bad news!! There's probably about a million different combos of stuff people have used. I use about one heaping tablespoon of Bon-Ami powder, won't scratch and does a decent job of getting rid of the clad-crud.

Get a coffee mug, put like 2 inches of peroxide (just the plain old hydrogen peroxide that you get at the store for like a buck) in it. Microwave for 2 mins, then drop your coin in it until it stops bubbling. Then repeat the process over and over again until you are happy with it.

Note don't nuke the peroxide with the coin still in it!!!! Take the coin out everytime!!!

This the method I use, but I also lightly wipe off the dirt with a Qtip after the peroxide bath. here are some results.

If you have any intention of ever selling the coin to a collector or of having it graded, do NOT clean any coin. Cleaning or dipping will devalue a coin 90 percent. If you are the last stop for the coin and you want to shine it up then do what you will. Hydrogen Peroxide is and oxidizing agent. In the concentration you buy it from at the drug store 1-3% it is pretty benign. At 15 percent it will bleach your hair white. At 40 percent it will burn your skin with only a second or two of contact. I used 40 percent H2O2 everyday for about 3 years while in the Navy and I have a healthy respect for it. Make sure the stuff you are using is the 1-3% solution.

I do not clean any coins except for clad. I do not buy, for any of my various collections, cleaned or polished coins.

I tried the peroxide method on a IH penny and it ate the coin. I only did it once and can hardly read it now.
