Good Weekend of Family Detecting

A few years back we started doing a little cold winter fishing trip on Black Friday. It was typically Hotrod53, myself, our brother in law and one or both of my oldest nephews.

Last year we had to have a change of plans and we turned it into a day of detecting with myself, Hotrod53, our Mom and two brother in laws. One of our brother in law just didn't take very well to detecting but our other one who is an avid outdoorsman little did we know that he would become hooked after that one cold day of detecting.

This year, a year after that first day of detecting our brother in law now owns a 705 and just recently purchased an e-Trac. We wren't sure if we were going to get a few days in of detecting but luck went our way and we were out for 2 and a half days.

Day 1: It was just my brother in law and myself in an area with about 3 inches of snow. Being that none of us own an e-Trac I wanted to take him to a few of our hot spots to see how well our 705's held up against the eTrac. If I took him to these hot spots and he pulled up some notable coins that we had missed I would probably order an eTrac from the car. Keep in mind that this was not a competition between detectors or detectorists, but mainly some open minded curiosity on my part and not the subject of this thread.

At our first location neither of us turned up a coin but both passed on what we expected were pennies. At the second location I found a sort of folk art pendant carved out of an Argentinian 5 Peso coin and a really crusty memorial. At the 3rd location Hotrod53 has pulled up about 10 notable finds over the last 15 years and I've been there about 5 times and have never found a coin. After about an hour at this location we both came up empty handed.

Day 2: Myself, Hotrod53, our Mom & brother in law headed to a brand new spot that we had never detected. We were excited due to the history at this location but we all pulled up a bunch of clad with three of us getting 1965 quarters which I think were the oldest finds. I think our Mom, Hotrod53 and our brother in law had pretty much similar handfuls of coins and I was on the trailing edge of finds at this location. I did win the prize for strangest find and maybe one of the strangest finds among any of us ever. I had a 36 signal and about 5" down I saw an eyeball staring up at me. This is the first time that I've ever looked into a hole and something was looking back at me. I was a toy eyeball with some kind of liquid and a weight in it that always makes the eyeball look up. We got a big laugh out of that. Our brother in law found a pretty cool dove type pendant at this location which did not appear to be precious metal but neat none the less. At our second location this was a place that we had been to many times before and we've found barbers, mercs and even an 1800's silver dollar was found at this location. My only coins at this location was a dime and two pennies with one being an unknown date wheat. The snow was pretty heavy there and we were passing on some of the penny signals. I don't know if we had even pulled up 10 coins between all of us at this location.

Day 3: Today it was myself. Hotrod53 and our brother in law. We went to an old home site that I have only been to once before and Hotrod53 and our Mom has been two maybe 5 or 6 times but I'm not exactly sure. Earlier in the year Hotrod53 went there for the first time with his 705 and found a couple of Indians and some wheats. My Mom and I went there a few days later, the day that I got my digger coil back in June and I found a clad dime and my Mom found a couple of clad coins.

Yesterday my brother in law and I started in an area that they had not hit too much in the past that was to the right of the old house. Neither of us came up with anything there. Hotrod53 joined us about 15 minutes after we got there and a short time later pulled up an 1865 Indian. About 45 minutes later about 15' from where he found the Indian I had a faint signal in the 30's and it ended up being an 1864 Indian. At that point in time I was really starting to think that my brother in law may be driving nearly 6 hours back home the next day empty handed when all of the sudden he had a signal about 10' from where I found my Indian. Literally popping out of the hole onto the ground was a pretty thick coin shaped object. He started rubbing it and we thought it may have been a token or a nickel but it seemed larger than a nickel. I think my gloves were a little cleaner so I grabbed it and rubbed it a few times and I could see some very straight lines on it. I was starting to see what looked like the shield on a coin that I had seen before but was too excited to remember what coin it was. If this was what we were starting to think it was then it would be only the second one in the family with our Mom finding one earlier in the spring at another site. I suggested that he wait until we could get some water. It turned out to be an 1866 two cent piece! We were so excited for him and it was pretty much exactly one year later after his first day of detecting. The one our Mom found earlier in the year was an 1865.

About 5 minutes after that I had another 28-30 signal which I expected if it was a coin, it may be an Indian being that's what the one I found about 10 minutes earlier ID'd as. I could tell that my target was in the plug and as I started sorting it out I saw a very small silver object that may or may not have been a coin. As I pushed some of the mud off of it I could see the worlds "United States". At first Hotrod53 said "I think it may be a 3 cent piece". As I gently got more dirt off it was a very thin smooth coin. I was shocked to find out that this was going to be my oldest coin ever, an 1831 half dime! She wasn't pretty but I'll take her. Previously about 3 years ago I had found an 1834 half dime which up until yesterday was my oldest coin.

We spent about another half hour or so searching in that area but with no other coins found. Hotrod53 had to go and my brother in law and I went on to one more site. This site was the site where our Mom found a 1745 King George. About an hour at this site we both came up empty handed digging some junk but on the way back to the car I did find an 1952 wheat.

This was a crazy day! Between 3 of use we only found 5 coins and the newest coin that we found was a 1952 and the oldest was an 1831. it's not very often that you have a day like that. Here are a few pics:

Awesome finds, congrats and thanks for sharing!

Boy, detecting in the snow. You guys are hard core!

Thanks for sharing, great stuff! How do you like the HF 6" coil? I've been using one for about a month on my 505.

I don't use the 6" HF very often anymore since I bought the 6" digger coil. It's still a great coil but I think the digger is tuned a lot better for silver.

I was using the 6" HF coil the first day because it was waterproof. On Friday and Saturday I got a little more daring and used the 10.5" MF coil and the digger coil. It seems like as long as you don't get snow up over or down inside of the strain relief on the non waterproof coils they will do just fine in the snow. My 10.5" MF coil and the digger coils were at times balls of ice. That 10.5" coil really gets heavy once those two big openings get filled with ice.

After my two finds with the digger coil on Sunday, I'd say it was unscathed by a few hours in snow and ice.

Definitely helped using the Predator piranah shovel the last three days.

I'd say you had a good weekend! Congratulations on the finds, especially the Half Dime! :clapping:

So did you order your new E-Trac yet?

Although it's a great detector and I did get to swing it a little bit, at this point in time I'm not convinced that it would be money well spent on my part. I like that it gives you more information which I definitely think would help you to dig less trash. It would also be nice not to change coils to get a different frequency like we have to do with the 705.

It wouldn't be out of the question to buy one some day down the road but until I see one go into a spot that myself, Hotrod53 and our Mom have been to and produce even a small handful of notable finds I think our 705's are doing a great job. Buying one isn't the problem, justifying it is.

I'm of the same opinion as Mapper65.... I've been holding out buying a Digger coil for fear that I may "have to buy" an Etrac and eventually may not be able to use the coil. Dig less trash, no doubt about it, on the downside, its heavier and more awkward not to mention the $$$. I also notice that many Etrac owners also own 705s for backups and there are many people who prefer the 705 over the Etrac. I think that those of us with 705s are holding our own at this point, I'm sticking with it for now.

Hey, you don't have to sell me! I have an Explorer SE, and someday it will go away. The 705 stays! :beers:

Holy cow you got a Capped Bust Half Dime, wow.... That's one on my wish list

That 2 center is in great shape too. The " WE " is nice and bold. That's the first thing on that coin that will wear down.

The 64 IH has a nice full " Liberty " too.

That's by far my best condition Indian to date. In our soil they don't always fare very well. I was surprised what it looked like after I took the brass brush to it.

As far as the capped bust half dime goes......I still have yet to find seated or standing in any denominaion and that's my second half dime. I guess one of these days I'll get seated or standing.
