Got a gamma 6000 need advice!

well got a great deal on a gamma 6000 and comes with the 8" stock coil, just bought a 11"DD coil is it going to be a big difference in depth results and finds? I hope so for what i gave for the coil! any info would be great!

I noted a couple of errors in their Owner's Manual. One is that the 4-Tone Audio is really like that on my Omega 8000. As a matter of fact, the Gamma is quite close to overall Omega performance except that some adjustments on the Omega are a little quicker. For the dollar, the Gamma is a decent value and quite capable.

My Omega came with the 10" elliptical concentric coil and while it works fine, I am still partial to a round-shaped coil, and I generally favor a concentric design. I have an itch to pick up a round 8" for my Omega as the one I used on the Gamma worked well.

You WILL see a difference between the 8" round and 11" elliptical of different designs. However, a lot of the difference you see will depend upon your ground and the trash content and your hunting style and detector set-up. Add to that the amount of realistic anticipation you have for "difference" between them. I see some claims, actually on many different forums about a variety of search coils and detector models, that leave me scratching my head. Some do an "air test" and get results that I just never see with the same detector/coil combo. They must be using a different measuring device or their imagination is more active than mine.

Often, a concentric coil of similar size and shape will get slightly better depth than will a Double-D design. A concentric coil will often provide much better discrimination characteristics than a Double-D. Due to coil dynamics a Double-D will more often provide a little quicker response and recover than a Concentric, but you'll also notice some differences in target response and TID between the two sides of a Double-D coil than you will with a concentric design.

To ME the topic of "depth" is way over-rated and used too often in discussions where it just isn't practical. By that I mean this: Most coins and similar sized targets are not locate all that deeply. Most of the time they are going to be in the surface to 4" range, and actual "DEEP" coins will be in an honest 5" to 7" depth range. Too often the "guess" made isn't quite correct to the actual coil-to-target depth when located. Also, I read of people wanting to find the deeper coins in a trashy environment. Well, the abundant and shallower trash is going to mask a good target signal and you're not really going to punch deep unless you thin out the trash first.

Now, with all that said, I can relate that in a couple of hunting situations this past month where I have searched with both the 10" concentric and 11" Double-D, there have been times when I got a little better depth-of-detection with the 11". Perhaps an inch to maybe an inch-and-a-half. I have also re-hunted some renovation work with the 5" D-D after using the 10" concentric stock coil and 11" D-D and nabbed an Indian Head and another penny and a nickel that I had missed with the larger coils. I'm of the opinion that the 5" coil can really make a better 2nd coil to either the Gamma or Omega than the larger 11" DD ... unless you have some sites that are relatively free of metal targets and you have some open areas to search.

So, if you are applying it in the right applications you might see a little better depth. You will see some different handling characteristics.

The one important Gamma advice to share is mentioned in the Owner's Manual regarding the Gamma's Volume control. The factory default is at the Maximum setting of '10' and I suggest leaving it there. Do NOT reduce the detector's Volume control. Instead, use high-quality headphones with separate volume controls and use them instead. Reducing the Gamma's Volume control to a rather low number will result in the diminished, or even lost, responsiveness to large silver coins like big ol' silver dollars and silver halves.

Enjoy your Gamma. Rather than ask everyone what performance you might see on a coil you've already purchased, I think it would be best if you would just report back on your personal findings after working both the stock and 11" coils in the field. Also, when you use them and report on the forum, it would be nice if you mention the settings used.

Happy Hunting!

hey monte thanks for the advice for sure and the the little quirks that lie hidden under these machines now i noticed last night i have a dime burrried close to 6.5" to 7" deep maybe i've i've had burried for about a week now and my 1270 fisher would bang on it like no tomorrow in all metal but in disc mode it would clip it and this is pretty much the same with the gamma disc or all metal with the sens cranked to the hilt and would register 40 most of the time but every other stroke you would get a dime register, and i find i dont use the tones all that much i use the single tone more than any, i actually prefer the gamma over the omega (had one of those ) just prefer the S handle over the pistol grip and the lightness is unbelievable, my hunting style is old cellar holes and fields mostly some have some trash in them some don't foil is a problem lot of the times on where i hunt around here, always comes up as nickel and small peices to
