I recieved this email back from one of the fairgraounds i had asked permission from.. this was thier response...anybody care to translated for it me?

Thank you for your inquiry about metal detecting at the Gold Country Fairgrounds. We are part of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, and therefore a state agency. We currently do not have a policy which allows for metal detecting on the fairgrounds, as all

I think they mean as "found items" those things that people could claim. Like keys, a named bracelet, etc. If I were you I would copy the letter and take it along for anyone who asks you about detecting there. Good luck - they have given you permission, Steve in so az

Dobbie, they haven't givin you permission but haven't made a concerted effort to stop those who are metal-detecting there, as long as there is no damage done! Like Steve said, make copies of the letter and carry one with your detecting gear and one in the car! If I were you, I wouldn't say anything to anyone about what you find, as you might be told to turn them in at the lost and found department, because they do say the items belong to the state! Soooo MUM is the word, unless the caretakers insist on showing them what you've found! You can have a hiding place for the good stuff and just have a few ugly clad coins, pull tabs and other junk. This way they won't know what you've found and you can show them you are cleaning the fairgrounds of trash. If anyone else asks you, then just say oh a few dirty pennies, a nickel or so, pulltabs, aluminum can shreds and etc. Don't show anyone your good stuff....only those you absolutely trust! Remember, MUM, is the word!!! Good Luck and I hope you find lots of goodies!

God Bless!

A really funny story happened to me once. I paid my 5.00 to go into a park that would allow me to detect in the water. The owner then asked me if I could find a very valuable silver dollar he dropped in the water 2 years earlier. I said sure but if I find it I wanted my 5.00 back. Well he agreed and I found it within 5 minutes of searching off the dock. I then went my way and found coin after coin after coin in the water. I had over 40.00 in change using just one tank. When I got out he along with a few others asked me how I did. I was nieve enough to show him all the coins I had in my BC. He and the others wanted them!! One guy said that he should be able to take a hanfull!! He then refused to give me my 5.00 back.

Anyway I told him a deal was a deal and he allowed me in the water. I did get my money back and I have been back there again. When I find ANY rings I put them in my booties and don't say a word. That is where I found my York PA class ring that I returned to the widow. He does make sure I pay the 5.00 each time!! But hasn't bothered me again.

To be fair to the owner, he and his friend had been drinking and they might have been drunk. They dop lead a different lifestyle than me!!

Anyway, I really don't think they care about old or new coins that you find. If you find a ring, somebody might have reported it lost. Just a thought.

like you should ask the caretaker and then if you get the green light, Go for it!

Well they did give you a most defintate maybe!!

Really, They are saying that the do not have a policy EITHER way. We currently do not have a policy which allows for metal detecting on the fairgrounds

If they don't have a policy that alows for it they also do not have a policy against it. Its that simple. Its master wordsmithing at its finest!!

Take along the letter. Go and have fun. You have the green light!!

Opps...not federal property but state...read my I stand corrected... message above...but it wouldn't hurt to read this as well though parts do not apply since it isn't federal but state.

Sorry for misreading your post.

First, if it is confusing...God isn't in it.
Second, when they use double talk...Satan is in it.
Third, being a 'federal government agency', if they change their position (right now sounds like they are on the fence making no position) and they opt to have you arrested...you're looking at federal charges and federal courts and certainly confiscation of your metal detector and everything else used in 'the crime' - even your car if you drove there.
Fourth, assuming the worst, you get arrested, maybe for 'damaging property' (an obscure definition subject to personal interpretation by everyone who sees these words), you - even though this is America - are guilty until you prove your innocence.
Fifth, being a federal agency, that means it is on federal dirt, federal police will be investigating and they love publicity and love to get into court...it is a way of 'getting a pay raise' if the police officer can say he went to a federal court and the person he arrested lost everything then he gets promoted or a pay raise ahead of others who sat around just collecting a check. Either way, you lose.

So personally, I wouldn't go near that place. Don't trust big brother.

Pete, It is a local fairground. So it belongs to a county or state, not federal. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. The letter just says not to damage the property.

it is a 'State agency'. So State Police will be called by the State agency if you 'damage propery'. (Even if they are leasing the property or own it, they will call the State Police for any crimes commited. State's have a State Archaelogist that 'controls the dirt' of their state...we in Michigan sure know about our State Archeologist, right MI guys.

Our Department of Natural Resoures in MI is responsible to the SA for the dirt. The DNR has more authority over the State dirt than the State Police does. I still would not mess with any of these people. A tree hugger may feel 'damage to property' is sticking a digger in the ground and cutting a blade of grass or killing some worm. You or I may see that as don't cut fences, chop down trees, etc. It is subject to individual interpretation and when the interpretation is left to courts and lawyers...who do you think will lose?

JMHO - do as you see is right but I still hold to my first 2 points:

First if it is confusing...God is not in it
Second, if it is double talk ('damaging property', 'we have no policy', etc.)..then Satan is in it.

Well, I certinly will not argue your points.

I have had some good conversations with the DNR people myself as I am in MI. I do however stay underwater and out of the public view!! But I do detect EVERY state park and I have permission to do it. So far in the last 6 years that has not been challanged. (Not to say it will never be!!)

These are posted at North Higgins Lake State Park.

Pete, The state owns the land AND the marked swimming area. Past the marked swimming areas in any MI lake is fee game. THEY will and have questioned me with my toys BUT I tell them where I am going and they have NEVER bothered me. I don't even turn it on until I get past the swim areas. AS I said, this I have in writing from the DNR.

we do not make a concerted effort to stop people from using metal detectors on the fairgrounds, as long as there is no damage to fair property.

I say, go for it!!!
