The Minelab x70 arrived today!! YEA!!!!! Only had a few minutes to spend with it but like what I see so far! :) Will miss my old Troy Shadow, but sure I'm gonna love the new x70. And in case I forgot to tell y'all a few weeks ago, I also like my new Garret Ace 250. I went from debating over whether or not to get a new detector, to ending up with two new ones... go figure.
Hope to get out and spend some time with it this weekend, if not before. Just got permission to hunt an 1890's site so I will probably give a serious trying out there.

Lisa

the VERY first day I had my x-70, with no using it beforehand I read the manual, watched the video and took it to an old farm house and it was one of my best detecting days ever! here is what was found that day..........first day ever with x-70

Go slow and keep that coil on the soil. Literally! :detecting:

Cool !!! Minelab makes a good detector, I have had a few of them mostly Explorers. Take some time to study it and it will serve you well. I have also had the ACE 250. It is a good little box. I plan to get one pretty soon for a backup. I hope you have great luck at the 1890's site and looking forward to seeing all the finds you post.

Stephen

Yeah, I'm looking forward to getting to know the x70. It's going to be a BIG change from the Shadow I used for many years. Had a lot of success with the Shadow but was ready to move on.

Hello Lisa, Read the manual & read it again. It will be important that you keep a 'Pocket Journal' of your finds & the criteria you used to hunt them, for the first few months. The Minelab X-Terra 70 is an 'Awesome Metal Detector' and will serve you well when you take the time to learn what it's telling you. Remember there are numerous video's, for the X70, on the club website we spoke of earlier that will help you get acquainted with your new 'friend'.

I will, Marty! Thank you for all of your help and advice. I appreciate you!

Lisa

You're gonna love the minelab :) Like Mike said, low and slow is the way to go..
What size coil(s) did you get with it?

Good luck at the old site!

Good hunting with your new detector and may you find some really nice old goodies! The more it is used the more goodies you will find! Do you have a coil cover on it? I always used one because of moving the coil on top of the ground....it will scratch the coil and wear it thin, otherwise! My friend wore her detector out like that! But the newer ones might be better made with their own coverings? May God Bless & Good Luck! Ma Betty

Lisa,
here is how I run mine, I have almost 2000 hours on my machine now, and this is what works best for me.

target stabilizer on
pattern 1.....always, I used to run all metal but was missing deep quiet signals because all the iron grunts was making me miss them, when I switched to pattern 1, I started finding a LOT of deep coins I walked right over before.
I run sensitivity at 25 almost always, any higher and I get a lot of falsing on deep iron. Never lower than 22, I think if you get much less than 21 sensitivity you lose depth very fast.
I use multi tone, and I rely on tones to dig. You can never trust the numbers, they are a good reference point, but the tones will be a better indication on a good target VS junk. A deep, deep coin will NOT give a good solid repeatable number. I have had 8-9" deep indians bounce from single digits (6-:geek: all the way up to the mid 40's, and OLD nickels can be all over the chart, especially V nickels, but their tone will be good, and smooth

but tone tells me it is a good target. Trust your hearing on the minelab xterra, not the numbers on the screen. This will take time, but once you learn what your machine is telling you, those iffy signals will start paying off for you. I always using tracking on every site. I put in all metal, Ground balance, put on tracking then switch to pattern one. If you need any help, just let me know

Thanks Terry, I appreciate your help. I'm going to print this and keep it with me for a while.

Lisa

not sure if you have this yet, but this is pretty reliable on targets that are 6-7".......but if items are real deep don't count on this being right....lol

Like they say x-terras you have to swing slower, but you will find things left by others. Glad you got it and can not wait to see your finds.
