Got My First Large Cent With The Safari Today

Safari***Ohio

New member
Just got back from hunting a very old foundation in the woods close to where I live. Had the Safari a little over a month now - approx. 20 hrs. in the field with it. Trying out Andy's , Quattro Book coin program of - (14-15) and (32-33-34-35-36-37-3:geek: only. Got a solid (3:geek: - even when crossed from three different angles - the large cent was right at the bottom of the plug when it came out of the ground - down approx. 6" . The coin looks in good condition over all - I should be able to read the date after soaking it in olive oil for the next few days. A GREAT way to spend a Sunday afternoon for sure!

Awesome job!!!!! I still gasp when I pull them out of a hole! My first one was a 1798 Draped bust type that the date was barely readable only with a magnifying glass. It's quite an incredible feeling isn't it!

I've been soaking the large cent in olive oil - it's not completely clean - but I can finally read the date ... it's an 1856. I don't know how to grade coins but it looks in fairly good condition for being buried for over 150 yrs.! I'll post a few photo's of the coin once it's done soaking - probably next week.

A typo corrected from my last post - the correct date ( clear and easy to read )on this coin is - 1846.

WOW!! Thats one of the best ways to clean and preserve an older coin pure virgin olive oil. Great job finding that coin . My oldest coin a 1787 New Jersey copper got the oil treatment, works really well. Congrats again, pics please, we need a little icing on the cake !! Ron :detecting:
