Got my oldest coin and a few other oldies...

Hi there

I got permission to hunt an old school around here and the weekend before last, I managed to find my oldest coin ever! An 1888 British penny that was used as currency in Australia in those early days. I also dug up a few more pennies and a sixpence. Then last Saturday I went back to that school and dug up a 9 pennies, 2 halfpennies, 1 silver sixpence and 1 silver shilling. These coins have not been in circulation in Australia since 1966 so it is a real thrill to dig up these old coins. Here are some pics and a couple of video links.

Cheers

1888! Nice find! If you're not keeping a journal of your finds, I'd encourage you to do so. When the weather turns bad it is always fun to pull them out and remember the hunt. I've got coins I found 35 years ago that I could almost give you a "play by play" of where I found them as well as the detector I was using. HH Randy

Thanks Randy. I guess for me my journal are my videos because I do film pretty much every single hunt especially those ones where there were likelihood of old coins to be found. I have actually made myself a DVD complete with menus for each hunt that I have posted on YouTube. Like you say, it is good fun to 'relive' those moments of pure joy when one unearths an old coin...

Cheers
