Got some deep relics today and a toasted half dime

I hunted a site that I have hit rather hard over the years and this is the first time back in over a year and the only difference is the ground is dry as punk (rain missing this area for some reason) and I have the SE Pro Coil installed. Previously I have hunted this 1700s-mid 1800s former saw mill site with the ML 8 inch coil and the stock coil This site has produced a Whig Political party button(1834) and a NJ copper and a nice 1782 Irish Halfpenny. The 2nd to last time I hunted it, in early 2007 I got two Coronet Large Cents there and on the last hunt NADA......

So, this morning, I did manage to get after a couple hours of digging shotgun casings, I finally got the beautiful 34mm 18th century decorative button. A few minutes later I got a musket ball, with casting sprue still attached (unfired I guess) and then a beautiful little 18th century Knee Breech buckle, that unfortunately the steel parts were very rusted and fell apart while attempting to restore it. But the frame itself is now stabilized and will be in my display case with the others. I did get fooled for a second on a shallow reading, thought I had a half cent for a split second, you never know about depth of coins at homestead, but it was a clad quarter. :( Just as I was ready to quit for the day I got a reading that could have been a button, or high reading shotgun shell, but to my surprise a think round disc appeared and I had to get out the magnifier, but I saw HALF DIME. LOL, this baby was bubbled, toasted in a fire.

After getting home and cleaning what I could, the Half Dime proved to be a 1842, and the button came out great after cleaning and so did the breech buckle. Overall I was happy to get out, the homesteads are still overgrown too much to hunt and hopefully in about a month my real hunting season will begin.

The Half Dime was my 21st coin Pre Civil War coin found this year and my newest one for the year!! It has been a great year for coins and relics for me, but the condition of my coins has really dropped off from what I am used to. I am one who prefers quality over quantity and would be happy to have half what I have found if those were in better condition.

Today's finds all were in Iron laden homestead ground, and the buckle and button and musket ball all were in the 8-10 inch range, the Half Dime was down about 5 inches.

Detector used, my trusty, original XS with the SE Pro Coil installed, hunting with Ferrous sounds and Iron mask wide open screen like I have done for 8 years................................

As I told you privately, If my trusty XS crapped out finally, I would be looking to buy one of the great SE's or EXII that are available. I can't trade up or anything and the price of the ET is beyond my sensible, justifiable spending range even if I needed a new detector!! But, if I wait a month or two I am sure you will be selling your ET for a great price~ LOL

Just kiddin Bob :)

I just realized it is not half dime size, it is Seated Dime size~ So, I am sure it is legit, it weighs 1.17 grams and with the wear on it that sounds right to me. I have a 1849 that weighs in at 1.28 it has some wear and I have a 1832 that is 1.35 grams, which is what a new one with no wear should weigh.

I think perhaps someone hammered this coin to dime size to double their value, and it ended up in a fire or a fireplace. :)

No NJ coppers in awhile, been stuck at 13 for a long time.
I have been OK with chiggers and ticks, I only hunt when cooler since I only hunt wearing Permanome treated pants, socks and boots. It WORKS, Called REPEL, sold at Walmart and Dicks.

Best coin find this year for something I never found before is a 1722 Rosa Americana copper.................My son found one years ago, not too many of them found.

A chain cent was found last weekend in Bucks County area btw. Wish I had found it. :)

Kewl find...the only place I have ever seen one of those was in a Coin Book!!!! I used to spray permanone on my clothes when I used to do a lot of Wildlife Photography. It worked very well.

I will have to remember the Repel. Last spring we had ticks galore here, more than ever.
