Gray Ghost v/s Vance

Sorry if this topic has been discussed before. My search didn't turn up anything.

I decided when I ordered my Deus I would get the WS4 backphones and then either the GG or Vance for when its cold or windy. I ended up ordering the GG and they arrived today. I just did some air test and I was not impressed with their sound. Seems muffled and not very sharp compared to the backphones. It's a shame too because they are VERY comfortable.

I don't think I am going to be happy with these and will probably send them back and order some Vance phones.

I just realized I never actually asked a question. :) So what is the concensus around here? Are the Vance preferred over the GG?

Thanks.

The Vance's are way to tight for me on my ears

My vanes just loosened up. Took 15 hours.

They are ok, not as comfy as my killer bees

I have both WS-4 and WS-5 for the Deus. The backphones are higher pitch more sparky sounding over the full headphones. When its real cold or windy I will wear the WS-5s though.

Does anyone know what the current "street" price is for the Vance? I could have swore a couple weeks ago when I was comparing phones the Vance's were priced at $100, but now on their website they are listed as $140. Did they just go up?

Thanks.

I have a pair of the Chef Phones...Vance uses Chef Phones carcasses and puts his "guts" in them. Vance uses very high quality speakers and have better sound than Chef Phones and Grey Ghost (I have heard). My Chefs are not comfortable...like a vice on my head but are loosening up or I am getting use to them. I am so darn deaf that sound quality is okay for me...I do love the back phones though. Thought about modding my spare set of Killer B's for the Deus. I like those headphones the best of all I have tried.

I use the WS5 headphones the most as i much prefer full ear coverage,of course another big advantage is that during the winter they also keep your ears warm, had tried the Chef phones before buying and must admit they sounded terrible and sounded muffled and not as crisp tone wise as the genuine XP ones.

So i mainly stick with the WS5 headphones, but if the weather gets ultra hot as it can during the peak of the summer,i use my T2 but this time i use the brilliant wired XP backphones, for a price of about $20-25 the sound quality from these wired backphones is possibly better than most high end wired headphones.and also the added bonus is they can be used on any detector and also a backup to carry in your pocket as they are so light.

Vance's muffs are way too tight for my taste and I finally had to break the headband and redo the clamping mechanism. Also had to add a second ear cup pad with the help of some super glue to get the padding thick enough to get the speaker protecting grid from resting directly on the ear. The sound is fine but for $130 I would not buy them again because of the comfort issue. The Grey Ghosts are comfortable and the sound is fine although the factory tells me they have 150 ohm speakers and the backphones use 16 ohm from what I understand.

The most logical choice if you have the WS4 package is to get the headphone clip for the receiver ($24) and experiment with different headphones until you find some that deliver the best sound and comfort.

Yes agree

Well none of this is good news. I was hoping to stay completely wireless, but it doesn't sound like I would be happy with the Vance phones either.

Exactly how does using the adapter work, logistics wise? Do you plug everything up and put the small remote in your pocket?

I don't know what you mean plug up? I use the adapter and plug in a set of Koss headphones that have the small jack rather than use a reducing adapter. I tried the adapter with my GGs and just liked the Koss' better. I put the cord and receiver in a pocket or pouch. It is VERY close to cordless hunting. :detecting:

Yes, that answered my question. I was curious about the placement of the receiver.

Thanks.

I have the GG and have never tried the Vance system. I have heard the Vance phones are tight as you can see echoed here. I love the GG myself. Very airtight and no outside noise. I think to each their own to be quite honest.

What is the model of Koss headphones do you use?

What find of koss headphones do you use? I am thinking of trying the adapter with headphones and also ear-buds but I don't know what kind to use. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks all.

I have hunted this way quite a bit this Summer. I used the $100 to get among other things the waterproof kit and the adapter. Surprisingly , the ear buds that come with the H20 kit have very good sound , I even use them on other detectors on occasion and while they're a little difficult to initially fit , once on they block out ambient noise very well and stay put. Great in the Summer. Not Grey Ghost type tones but that not neccessary the Deus to begin with. i also found the wired backphones from XP to sound very good for $22 but they are very cheaply made---broke the central hinge first time out (just fell apart in my hands--very fragile) and had to glue them together permanently with super glue and some plastic----but the sound is fine :)

I am looking on QZ5, but it seems that this model is very heavy.

I have not used the Vance phones and have only used grey ghost on the ATX.I can say I am using a pair of Sony headphones, full ear muff and what an amazing sound I am getting. Very happy with it.
