It was kind of a spur of the moment decision to get out today but Hotrod53 and I went to an old brewery that he had been eye balling for a good number of years. Most of the land has a main road cut right through where the building was. The only thing that remains is the stone back wall which is about 20' high and right along the edge of the road. There is a some land up behind the wall but it's really steep although there are a few semi-flat spots here and there.
We scaled the hill to get up behind where this place was and it was one of those places that if you weren't paying attention, in some areas you could tumble down the hill and fall off of the 20' high stone wall onto the road possibly to get run over by a passing car. Good thing for the piranha shovels to anchor yourself down in those unsafe areas.
We spent about 40 minutes there and weren't coming up with anything. We saw two areas cut into the hill that looked like there may have been springs coming out at one time. Very near one of those areas, all of the sudden under some leaves I got a nice solid signal. I kicked the leaves out of the way and pushed my shovel into the ground which was very loose in that area and when I pried up and I saw the edge of a silver coin. It ended up being an 1894-O Barber quarter! It was probably less than 3 inches below the surface. It's a little smooth but the detail is fairly decent. I found it with the 6" Coiltek coin and it rang up a solid 42. We spent about another 45 minutes there and the only other thing that I found was a typical brass tool check type tag that has "BUDD 172" stamped on it.
I didn't realize until I got home that the brewery was only in business for 3 years which may have explained the lack of other targets in that area. The funny thing was that I noticed on one of the web sites that talked about this place a guy had posted about a year ago, "sounds like a good place to go scan around with my metal detector". If he ever made it there, he didn't get it all.
This is the first year that my first coin of the year was a keeper.
