Ground balance question for avid X-terra users or perhaps Minelab.

Basically I assume one can lower sens. without re-ground balancing...my question if one raises their sens. do they have to re-ground balance..Input appreciated...

Generally no, but ground consistency, ground mineralization level, coil frequency & coil type all play a part. From a practical standpoint if you start to get some chatter after increasing sensitivity then a little tweak may be in order, but a large amount would not be likely. i.e. a couple numbers higher or lower, but not something on the order of 5 or greater.

There's a subject I've been loathe to bring up because it may be seen as too technical, but I wonder if users ever think about precisely how deep into the ground they are ground balancing. That is, are you ground balancing to the top one inch of soil, the top two or three inches of soil? What happens when the ground is stratified like a layer cake and there are let's say five different layers with different GB points going down to 10 inches? Since lower frequencies penetrate deeper into the soil, does a 3kHz coil achieve a better composite GB for layered soils with different GB points? These are things I am thinking about as I blow through red lights & stop signs. Who needs to be texting on a cell phone to be distracted, honest Officer I was thinking about my 3kHz coil.

Gosh I hope I spelled correctly..Honestly Bill some awful good points...Personally for these reasons among others I would hate to miss a good coin by an inch so I would re-ground balance and noise cancel if I raised my sens or perhaps start at Sens. of 30 when I start and lower as needed. Lets face it generally in ones own neck of the woods
we pretty much know our minerlaization and general hunting conditions but honestly its so easy to do both in Auto and takes seconds at best one would like his unit to be
at Max efficiency so would advise anyone in the field to do both procedures especially if we move a great distance or the ground becomes a different color. Do not take this post out of context as I appreciate your input and respect your abilities as a member of our hobby and if we stopped for a cup of coffee would probably be hours before we left.
Have to admit your above questrions have entered my mind but was chicken to bring them up in forum..Now that you have looking for some more input as we need more dancers and less wallflowers...

Dan-Pa, if you are not sure after adjusting the sensitivity or any other time about the GB, just throw the TRAC ON like I do for a few swings then turn the TRAC OFF, that should reset the GB for a while.

BB, not about texting but about talking on a cell phone causing a distraction. In a county here, talking on cell phones have just been recently made illegal while driving(they even want talking on "hands free" cell phones made illegal) and the Police are suppose to enforce the law. The same Police who are suppose to give out tickets, they themselves, talk on 2-way radios while driving, and worse yet also look on a computer screen with key board while driving situated on the car's center dash!!! Sounds fine to stop accidents BUT how about talking on 2-way radios while driving??? They pick on cell phones but did not make it illegal for Taxi Cabs, Police, etc., etc. to talk on 2-way radios while driving, a BIG double standard!!!

BB, that's a great point you make about strata layers in the coil, and I admit it's something that's crossed my mind once or twice. Could be a reason why we do need to re-balance when there is no apparent change to soil colour or type....maybe it's the layer just below the surface that is changing. From articles that I've read, gold prospectors run into these problems frequently, and that is probably why the gold detecting PI machines shine in these areas. For the coin and relic hunter, experiencing going over a small area of coals and ashes just below the ground surface can demonstrate how a lower strata can change things dramatically for the detector. The point made by David about using auto Trac does help where there are frequent and subtle changes (it does on the beach). Could it be that the detector, during the ground balance process, tries to balance to all strata that it reaches, ie. tries to strike a balance between differing soil conditions it encounters during the balancing process? My technical knowledge of the electronics of a metal detector could be written in capital letters on the back of a postage stamp and there would still be lickin' space, so these thoughts of mine a purely those of a layman, not a technical person. if one needs to re ground balance after raising the sensitivity then what is the point of lower the sensitivity to single numbers to GB in the first place? Ok now I am confused?

I used to levae my sensitivity at 23-24 when I arrived at a site and ground balanced, then I saw where others here suggested lowering to single numbers before doing GBing, so what is the best method?????

G4e, With the success you've been having running in multiple tones, don't worry about lowering the sensitivity to set the GB. The reason I tell folks to lower the sensitivity prior to performing the GB procedure (and then raising it afterward) is because many of them (new to the X-Terra) become confused trying to separate the audio response of the GB tone and the background tone of the threshold with a high sensitivity. If you are hearing those 28 tones as well as it seems, set your threshold just barely audible, and keep your sensitivity as high as you can without chattering. JMHO HH Randy

Ok Randy, thank you. I know for a long time I never lowered it, never had any trouble. Then I read we were supposed to do it. So last few weeks I have been doing it, I simply could not see a difference. I thought in the back of my mind that maybe I was missing something so I better do it that way....lol

some hunts I go on I do not even post pictures unless I get a lot of stuff, in the last 10 days I have dug the following, although all was not posted:

41 wheats
4 silver
1 indian
2 tokens
lots of clad, including kennedy half
countless relics, buckles, harmonica reeds, etc
a BUNCH of non ferrous trash
