Ground Balance Question

unearth

Member
Hello All-
I was wondering how everybody "noise balance" their machines. I've heard two different versions. One, follow the Minelab instructions, holding the coil 12" in the air, or; leave the coil on the ground and balance. Which one, if either, is best:help:

I don't think anyone was concretely sure in either direction. Mine Lab never gave a firm answer on that either. One hint though, might be in the ETrac manual, ML is saying once again, that noise canceling should be done 12 inches off the ground. They had an excellent opportunity to change it but they didn't. There maybe a case for it being more correct on the ground, but there is a chance you could have your coil over a silent masking target and/or a section of ground that doesn't truly represent the ground you are going to be swinging over, in which case in the air would probably be better. One can always speculate.:detecting:

I asked this a couple weeks ago. Like it was stated it states this in the E-TRAC manual and it states the same thing in the SE one. If you read through that thread I posted it seems to me it is not written in stone. Try and see what works best for you.

I think that is the whole 12 inch thing, at 12 inches the coil is as close to the ground as possible without being able to pick up any metal in the ground. Following that reasoning, if you could find "for sure" clean ground. You would probably have better results NC'ing on the ground because that's the position your coil is in when you hunt, but again with silent masking and such, how could you be sure you found clean ground?

that's a good point

I just walk onto where I'm going to detect, hold the coil about a foot off the ground, Push the start button, and as soon as the threshold hits the headphones I'm off detecting. I read some where in this Forum, about 2 years ago, that the detector sets itself when you turn it on, so why bother to do an extra setup. I have been doing this for the past 2 years without any problems, works for me. HH.
