Ground Balancing & Pinpointing with SEF coil on Tejon

Cliff KS

I recently bought the 10x12 SEF coil for my Tejon. The manufacturer claims it is easier to ground balance than most coils, but to me it seemed really touchy and hard to ground balance. I tried to hunt an old farmhouse site where there was some dry grass and weeds and it seemed to give many false signals from all the dried out stems it was touching or bumping on the swing -- even the little wispy grass stems. I had to turn the sensitivity down to about 3 to keep it from driving me bonkers and I did locate some targets, but I am wondering if it was so noisy because I may have been off a little on my ground balancing?

Is there some trick or tip to ground balancing this coil? Where is the pinpointing for this coil? Near the tip or in the center like a concentric?

For pinpointing, turn the coil 90 degrees. The coil is active from the front to the back in a line. For quick and dirty pinpointing you can use the sticker - do the side to side movement and move the coil slightly forward. When the signal disappears, it is most of the time just under the sticker (if it is not too deep). It needs just a little practice.

For the falsing, try to fix the cable with some velcro strips and be sure that you have no dirt under the coil cover. Also, be sure that you are ground balancing on a clean piece of ground.

Thanks for the reponse.

I did have the cable fastened with velcro strips and the coil did not come with a coil cover and I have not put one on it.

I think I will have to work harder on getting a better ground balance.

I have the Tejon with a sef 10x12 coil also in my soil I can gb it with the sef easier than the stock 8x9 concentric as far as pinpointing it's a little aggravating at first but with practice it becomes easier! My soil in my area is highly mineralized I call it the ground from The devil. My sef is going to stay on my detector and eventually I am going to get the 5.75 widescan for hunting in trashier areas! Tesoro makes great detectors but they need to make a model specifically for really highly mineralized soil like you find in the areas like culpepper va and Tennessee and Georgia!! If they do they will sale the heck out of them!! I would be more than happy to get one I would even be willing to do a field test for them!!
