ground balancing

Got A stupid question, I have a xterra 505 when i g/b i pump up and down with a 4" range, the sound stays the same , If it's loud i lower the numbers. I think I'm doing it right. But I've heard you are suppose to pump up and down till it gets quite. Manual is basic. Please help.

No, not quiet. The threshold hum should stay the same when pumping the coilup and down. Or as close as you can get it.

Thank's then I'm doing it right.

The way that I understand it, if it is going up and down, that proves that it is not balanced. When it is a constant tone, it has balanced itself. On a 705 if you're using tracking, it's always correcting. In your case I could see why balancing is much more important.

I have an X-Terra 50 which is an earlier version of what you have.
On mine you have to pump the coil up and down and listen to see if you hear a high or low tone.
You then adjust the detector until you are at the point between the change from low tone to high tone.
My machine is different than yours in that you have a threshold, so you pump the coil up and down (you may want to pump the coil form about 8 to 10 inches to the ground)
and listen for the sound to see if it gets louder, softer,or stays the same.
If the threshold gets louder as the coil is lowered to the ground, the detector is set too positive and the ground balance needs to be reduced.
If the threshold gets softer or disappears as the coil is lowered to the ground, the detector is set too negative and the ground balance needs to be increased.
If the threshold volume remains the same, then the detector is properly ground balanced.
Do not worry about the sound that the detector makes when raising the coil.. just listen when lowering the coil.. this will make things easier for you.
