GTAx 550 vs. the new ACE 250

I'm buying my first detector and I've got a little extra money to spend on a GTA 550 but I can't help but think I might get essentially the same detector in the ACE 250 if I can stand waiting a couple of weeks. Any thoughts?

I have a 550 as a backup to my Explorer. My dad uses it and does real well. It's a great coin hunter and has really accurate ID and pinpoint/depth capabilities. He uses it for relic hunting too and has found US plates and gobs of bullets. I don't know about the 250, but I'm sure it's great too. The choice is yours, either way you'll get a great machine.

between 28 different detectors, including the GTAx 500 and it placed very highly, matching the depths achieved with such heavyweights as the Spectrum XLT and the CZ5 and beating out many of the other machines tested.
Without reading any tests on the 250, I'd have to side with C.C. on this one, but if you decide not to buy the 550 let me know, I'd pick one up in a heartbeat if the price was right!

Only believe half of what you read and nothing you see. GTA 500 is a 7-8 inch unit and a CZ a 10-12 inch unit in my neck of the woods...Not knocking Garrets but with the exception of the GTI 2500 with an ID non metal mode they are not depth demons, but have excellent ID, notch and tone ID which make them an excellent unit...

I'm swinging a 550 and it's a great little machine! I've never used the 250 obviously....but I don't think there would be much comparison. Go with the 550. You will not regret it. It's easy to get the hang of, and loves the coins.

Dan the GTA 500 may be a 7-8 in Pa but here in MI it works great. I've hit dimes at 9 and quarters at 10-11" the 500 did really good for me and my buddy likes it as well he was using a old Whites Coin Master then went over the same area with the 500 and was pleasently suprised at the amount of coins he'd found with it. But I still love my 2500 <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D">

We should be talking about the 550 my error in stating 500..550 had a power boost to get some extra depth...unfortunately we are not playing on a level field and Garrets just work better in some areas than others. Sorry if my post misled anyone.I guess we go back to whatever works again...Tough to beat a CZ for raw depth and that includes Explorers also. Depth isn't everything and many factors to be considered when purchasing.Usually a trip to your local mult-line dealer will let you know what the fellows use as deep seekers, trash hunting etc. for your area and again operator expertise has to be considered also.

The CZ5 had an 8" coil, the 500 an 8.5" and the Spectrum the 9.5".
Realize also that this was only one type of test media and couldn't possibly cover every situation one might encounter in the field... I'm sure that if the test were in wet sand or highly mineralized soil the CZ would have blown the 500 away.
I also am sceptical of what I read, but this test SEEMED pretty viable.
Peace,

my 1st md was a 550. i found all sorts of silver coins and jewelry with it. it's a GREAT machine. get a used model and you won't be dissappointed.
