Looking for tip on 1350,Had some issues with eliptical coil, but are working them out.Could really use and tips and hints anybody could give me really like this detector.......thanks in advance kd

[size=small]Here goes - youll want co copy and paste these.

This is from Andy (NM):

Easy to use detector

Here are my tips:

1. Tape the coil cable straight up the lower rod.

2. Set the threshold to the point where you can barely here it.

3. Then, after number 2, run sensitivity at max.
If the detector is not stable back down a notch, or until it becomes so.

4. Run it in jewelry mode for max depth.
If you run it in coin mode you loose some depth.

5. Get the 4.5 inch coil for it. That coil will give you great target separation and ID around old houses and in trash.

6.Make sure you always have spare battery holder. That is the only weakness of the Garrett.

7.If the ID jumps from iron to coin...it's junk.
If it jumps in the coin range it's a deep coin most of the time.

The Garrett GTP 1350 is the same model like the GTAx 1250 but the 1350 has profiling (sizing). I think that profiling isn't really necessary, because you can tell by the length of the tone what size the target is.

I don't like that you turn profiling on every time you press pinpoint; because you have to press it again to turn it of. It uses a different tone in profiling mode than in disc mode...why...it's not helpful. That profiling is just a help if you hunt a place where targets are not to close together (Beach).

This is the only place I disagree with Andreas, and its my personal feeling. He's right in his description of the function, but I LIKE the profiling feature. To be fair, I didnt at first. But once I decided to let it teach me how it should best be used, I got a new appreciation for it. Here's the sequence I follow:

A. Press PinPoint and, well, pinpoint!
B. Once pinpointed, Profiling auto-engages and you allow it work, letting the data sink in...
C. Turn off Profiling by pressing the button once.

Simple sequence, very logical - easy to get used to.

In trash you can't rely on it alone (Profiling) because the coil sees too many targets at once and the reading is off.

The GTP 1350 can profile size with ALL Garrett coils, unlike the GTIs.

Is the Garrett deep ??? Yes if you follow my tips.
It is as deep as every other top of the line detector out there.I compared it to the Whites MXT and can say the Garrett hits better on silver and copper, but the MXT is a little hotter on nickels. The Garrett runs more quiet.

The Garrett is well balanced and fun to use. You don't have to read the manual every time you use it, because it's that easy. There are no outside controls you could accidently bump or turn.

Target ID is right on if you use the right coil for the area you hunt in. Nickel can come in a little higher some time, so accept one more notch up.

I liked the 1250 better, because I don't fancy the profiling. Performance is the same.

Andy

In Response To: "Hoping to pickup my GTA 1350 tomorrow. (Farnum)"

A great machine, one you can and should practice a lot with. The Garretts are overlooked a lot by people - to their detriment. The more I use one (1350) the more capable I learn it is.
+ It's very sensitive and running SENS too high will kill you. Especially in trashy sites. Always start low (4-5) and work your way up till the falsing gets ugly, then back down two notches. As Bill Revis says, "The 1350 is sensitivity driven - highly so."
+ Strap the cable to the lower rod so it doesnt flop around. It'll pick up the wires if your SENS is too high. Remember to give it a little strain relief - I use Velcro straps.
+ In clean sites, crank er up. The depth is there.
+ Deep/small targets result in SHORT DURATION beeps. NOT "quieter" or "softer"... shorter.
+ Don't be afraid to swing it a little fast. It gets a bit deeper when you do and still picks up the good signals - slow down once you've isolated the signal.
+ Test the trash separation at home on the floor, in your yard etc, so you have an idea of how things work in the real world. This factor can make or break you. I get a dime at 2-3" from a nail.
+ Work to pinpoint without the button. The 1350 lends itself to this, it's easy to learn and saves time.
+ Understand that the profiling feature comes on AFTER pinpointing for a reason. Then learn the Edmonton "Profiling Double Tap". Life gets less stressful when you accept these things.
+ Keep your batteries warm. Use headphones.
+ Dont be cheap. Get both the dust and coil covers.
+ Make the "Rubber Bumper PinPoint Mod". Get a 3/8-1/2" stick on rubber bumper at the hardware store and stick it on the PP button. Here's a pic):

This is a genuine help.
+ Go back and read my first tip again.

Davhut Thanke you very much!!!!Very good information. Will try to put it to good use.And yes i will cut and paste,as a matter of fact i already have....Thanks again kd

There are good tips here but ill add a few. The dd eliptical coil goes even deeper and gives better signals of some mid depth coins. The drawback of the dd is it picks up multiple targets and rings bottlecaps as coins. I used the dd in some non trashy areas and i pulled out alot of older coins at 8-10 inches, coins which i had missed with the standard coil. I found that with any coil alot depends on technique. Wheat pennies jump between the penny and dime ring. Buffalo nickels ring at nickel and jumps to penny and dime and never hits the poptab. Its funny now that ive found 6 buffalo's ive learned how they hit and my last one i called it before i dug it. Ive found that 6 inch coins and deeper only ring out every couple swings. Try target from different angles, circle around it, or try wiggling the coil short and quickly over the target. Then i pinpoint it, if its a deep compact strong signal then i dig. I rarely use the profiling. You can consistanlty find 6-10 inch coins, but there iffy signals and are not obvious targets. Start digging deep signals and youll learn whats what. It just takes some trial and error and alot of digging. It took me one summer of detecting to learn my 1350machine well, it just takes time. Now im finding alot of wheats, buffalos and silver deeper than 6 inches. The first month or so i found nothing deeper than 5 inches. Rechargable batteries work great, just as much depth and they seem to last even longer, just make sure you switch to the rechargeble setting on the menu.
