Had To Get Out! Short Hunt

Old Longhair

Crazy Ol' Foole
Staff member
I had to get out today. I just couldn't take it anymore. Problem was that the only places where the ground is thawed is out in the open, and it was a windy day that temps topped out @ 33

Right now that would be a banner day to me. we still have snow on the ground here.

WTG, nice finds and I didn't think they still had play money like that in the 70's. All the ones I find are in the 50's and 60's

I still love finding buffalos even though in our area it's not too often that you pull one up with a date on it.

Nice short hunt. I wanted to get out bad today but it rained all day.

Sorry to hear it was so cold. This is the latest Winter I can remember for long time.

How deep were those targets, Longhair?

All 4 targets were 9"+ deep. I was ignoring everything that wasn't deeper than 6".

Hey Longhair? Whats the coldest temp. that you run your 705 at? Can you use it below 32F? I'm on the other side of the big pond from you & it looks like we will finally be seeing some 40F+ temps later this week. Al from Wisc.

I agree with 7centsworth. I've hunted for short periods below freezing before the ground tightens up too much in the fall, so for the most part you're good as long as the ground is "dig-able". We're supposed to be up near 50

I've been surface hunting Indian artifacts for 30+ years in plowed fields & March tended to be my most productive month-well that's almost over.Hitting farm fields while you can is a great tip.I'll be hitting them again but this time with my 705 looking for copper Indian artifacts along with other relics. I picked up the 3kHz 9" coil for that reason. Does that sound like the coil to use in this situation?

It is a good coil for that as long as the residual trash density allows it. A lot of old homesteads are littered with nails and make a DD a good choice, but if the ground is fairly clean crank it up and get busy. I like hitting good areas with more than one frequency just because one might see what another didn't respond to well. So for me it's the LF coil first, followed up by a pass with the HF.

Thanks.....once I get to know my machine I'll expanded out to other coils-HF,DD,etc. For now I'll use my standard coil & LF.
