Hadn't been out detecting in awhile but did score a 44 D Wheat penny...

at a store with one of those 'take a penny - give a penny' containers by a cash register. Saw the wheat shafts on the back of the penny so...I took the penny and gave a memorial in its place

Never know where one will find old coins. I know one time and am not sure of who did this but I used the urnal in a mall one time and in the bottom of the water there was a silver dime. Wasn't going to fish it out. When the urnal flushed it remained in the bottom. It was then I took a look at the other urnals and someone had put a silver dime in each one of them too. Without rubber gloves I wasn't going to reach in to fetch them out. The next time I came to that mall I checked and the dimes were all gone. I was thinking maybe a janitor or security guard had gotten them out of the wishing well (found in most malls) and thought he'd be 'cute'.

Well, I mention this because I recall a story I once read in a detecting book of how a guy used an outhouse one time and he had dropped a $5 gold piece and it fell through the cracks and down into the ... yech.

This was when $5 meant a lot and a gold coin even more. So the guy went back into the house and came back out with a small box and dumped it into the outhouse. A friend asked what he was doing and he told the friend he was going to move and go into the yech to recover a bunch of gold coins. You see he dropped in a bunch ot $20 gold pieces. When the friend asked him why he was doing that he said "I wouldn't go into that mess for a $5 gold piece but I will go in to get back it and a bunch of $20 gold pieces'.

People will do strange things. I'll swap a penny for a penny but never go into an outhouse dump...unless it has been a LONG LONG time since it was used to recover a coin (and bottles).
