Has anyone ever done this before?

Here I was today near the end of my 5 hour hunt I look at the auto sensitivity and it's off and I am running it like at 27. No wonder I am getting new tones every 2-3 X's per second. I must have hit it by accident when I was adjusting the auto sense. This actually turned out to be a good thing as I was still picking out the coin out of the multitude of tones I was getting running in AM mode.

So when I switched back to auto mode it was a snap listening with my ear then. It sounded like the machine wasn't even working as opposed to the instability of the settings I had b4.

Anytime you make something harder for yourself in any area it always is much easier when it is done in a more simplified manner. Kind of like sparring with a really good boxer and then you spar with the guy next door. You blow right through him like he isn't even alive. I recommend everyone to run in an unstable setting and still get coins and then go back to it being stable and seeing how much easier it is to pick out the good tones.

Best I did was a 27 wheatie and i found an old interesting designed copper(?) bracelet. I was showing it to the other MD and he said. interesting design and I was in a rush to visit my son so when I got to the city I remembered the other MD still had that bracelet. I think he forgot to give it back to me but then there is a part of me that says he did it intentionally.

I have been trying to use ferrous sounds (with the iron discrimination almost all the way off) instead of conductive sounds. It's like listening to heavy metal (no pun intended) versus Simon and Garfunkel what with the barrage of sounds. I have to say that I snagged a couple Indian head cents that I probably wouldn't have heard with conductive. But back to your point, I will occasionally slide back into the quieter mode just to let my ears relax a bit. I will also pump up my sensitivity to point where it's a tad unstable because I think it maximizes depth. Inevitably what happens though, is I move to a different piece of ground where there are either more trash targets or more minerals and the detector goes crazy. Then I step it down.

AM mode with Fe tones is the way too go -- > http://www.minelabtips.com/index.php/title/Ferrous_vs__Conductive/ID/b0655919/fuseaction/article.main.htm

I think more user are starting to see Auto sensitivity has its place. Unlike the E-Trac that i think gives you a bar that the machine recommends for sensitivity we pump it up blindly sometimes too much, not recognizing the amount of falsing and mineral interference. You may loose a little depth in Auto, but sometimes its worth it. The machine doesnt have to sift thru as much noise which makes it easier for you to find the sweet tones in tuff situations. Same goes with sensitivity in iron ridden locations... sometimes its just better to back it down and catch those good targets about the large iron objects that others have missed trying to get deep. Ferr sounds for me work great if im opening up the disc, but if i go the other way, say IM 28 i prefer Cond sounds. I do that just because the sounds are directly related to which ever mode you are running in. Cond for me is more constant digitally which id say relates to a more percise tone. However, in iron ridden area i go to Iron moving the IM up a bit just because of the way Cond sounds react to iron. You just really have to be flexable and recognize the changes in the area you are hunting. This is likely very difficult for new Explorer users just because they have no idea yet when they are getting too much interferrance from EMI or the ground.
