Has anyone ever found a topless thimble???

I found this silver one the other day with a rotted second thimble on top of it.

I've found them. Had a friend tell me they were sometimes used as a poor mans bullet mold. Don't know if its true or not.
 
I found several on an archaeological dig. They were not silver. They dated to the early 1800'S. As stated by the archaeologists. We were looking for the site of a trading post. Thought we had it when I came up with several "topless" thimbles. But he said they were too new! The trading post was pre 1800.
