Last summer my sister and brother in law who live in another state were able to get permission for us to detect a few historic landmarks. We drove about 6 hours from home and went right to work with my brother in law who is a 705 user and recently added an e-Trac to his fleet. The deal was that we had to turn everything over to the historical society and they would eventually put the stuff on display. At a few sites we didn't turn up anything older than a wheat but we went to one that we pounded a bunch of old coins. My Mom started off with a Barber dime, I found a Barber dime and a V nickel in the same hole and we also found some indians between us along with a few old artifacts and a really old toy plane. It was a lot of fun. At the time we were a little disappointed giving up our good finds but we knew that was the deal going into it.
Not quite a year later we often talk about possibly trying to get with a few of the local historical societies and see if they will let us detect some of their old properties. As much as you don't like to give up finds I think in this case if they were going to display our finds and give us credit either by name or with photos displayed with the items I could see us being able to work something out. For the most part we just love finding old stuff and getting the chance to detect a spot that you know could be loaded with history is exciting enough.
I'm all about local history but I think some of these people involved in these organizations are in it more for social reasons or they are local business people hoping this helps them advance their business. I'm just curious if anyone has talked with any historical societies and what kind of response you received. I would think that anyone that is truly in it for the history would jump at the opportunity to have some honest people show up and find some clues to the past.
We've been detecting this old colonial site that a family member and their neighbor owns and we've pulled some nice stuff out of it. I would think that the local historical society in that area would go nuts if they knew what we've found. I'm also hesitant to reveal this information to them because you may open a can of worms between the historical society and the property owners. I think there are some people out there that think history needs to stay where it's at but I don't think any of us on here are of that impression. Why not show people the history and let them learn about the past.
Sure it's easy enough just to go and ask but I figured I would see if anyone on here has worked out any kind of arrangements like that with a historical society?
