...this from a site that I have found mid-19th century British regiment buttons, as well as several Canadian WWI items.
It is the size of a cap badge. Inscription reads South African Heavy Artillery. Boer War?
 
Steve, Great find!!! It may be WW1, and I would think it is not common badge, Probably brought back by a Canadian Soldier. It was common to trade badges and mount them on belts.

3. Gilding metal helmet badge: crossed cannon barrels above a double scroll inscribed " South African Heavy Artillery": superimposed upon the barrels is a Springbuck's head. Worn in France 1915-19. greatest width being 2-5/16".
