Hat medal ???

This U.S. emblem is larger than a quarter and smaller than a half dollar. It is of heavy copper and there is a trace of gold plating left as seen to the left of the "U". The letters are raised and actually not cast with the rest, but must have been sweated on. The back is affixed with a small screw that has a square head that is inset into the body as can be seen between the "U" and the "S" of the face. The clasp was not made to be pinched off, but to just stay on after being pushed down on the pins. It seems to heavy to me for a clothing item. I thought perhaps it might have gone on a hat. Any ideas when it might have been made? Found it about 5 inches deep. The coin is just a coin from Kenya I found in the same area.

In my era, Vietnam, these are collar brass for uniform. Not sure year on your find but sure look like collar brass.

It is a collar metal tab. I used them during the early 1960's. The US and backing come apart so one can polish them seperatly. The "cheaper" ones the PX sold was pressed out of one peice. Nice find/bad memories for me.
