I have one of the original Explorer XS's. I just notice that for the last 3 or 4 times out on the beach that the machine is noisy. I usually keep the threshold set at 7 and it is usually fine. When I got down to 6 threshold is usually silent. Not any more. I can take it all the way down to the lowest number and I still get alot of noise or interference. Does anyone know why that is? I hate to have to send it back and find out that I set something wrong and it is my error. But I don't think that it is. I would appreciate any help that you can give me. HH

Di,
That noise happens from time to time if you were hunting where you normally do. I have ran into that problem in is like a high powered signal that no matter what you do you can not get rid of it. I have played with the Sen., noise cancel, everything I could think of and it still had the constant interferance.

Open your battery compartment door, turn the XS on and when it gets to the first screen, pop the battery out. This will cause it to default into a test and reset procedure.
You might also want to take the coil cover off to see if any sand or other debris was trapped between the coil cover and coil. TB

Joe it used to work fine before it just started doing this. I have been to A.C. and Wildwood and it does the same thing in both places. Doesn't just seem to be one beach. It is happening on all of them. I think that it is annoying. I have done the same procedure as you in messing with the sensitivity and noise cancel but it still does it. I just want to know if this is right or I should send the machine back. HH

I just did as you instructed but it still makes noise. I always take off the coil cover and clean the cover and coil after every use. HH

you might try a different coil. If a different coil is quiet then you know you have a coil problem.

Since you hunt alot in damp areas, I wonder if moisture could have made it to the inside, or maybe pinpoint switch is stuck in the on position. TB

Make sure that your coil does'nt have a crack in it and getting moisture inside! Try a different coil and see if this helps.

Nope it isn't stuck in pinpoint.Gonna change the coil and see if that is the problem. Thanks Tom

i also found out that later on, with the sensitivity cranked up high, it would do it at many locations going down the beach.
change coils like others have said and test again.

Some leaked worse than others, if you let it dry out it should work again but don't get it wet again.

The coil might work again but I wouldn't be so sure it will be 100%. I've only had one go bad but my hunting bud has had two. I've posted a couple times saying to reseal the strip epoxy on the coil because it appears pinhole size holes are letting the moisture in but no one has ever replied, so I figured most don't think it's a problem. Usually when you have a coil go bad from water damage the evidence is there, but just a little tough to see. Look for hairline cracks also.

I just carefully inspected my coil with a magnifing glass and I can see where water and moisture could very well leak in. I have never had mine in water with the exception of wet grass and have never had a problem but would like to fix it so I will not have a moisture problem. CC, what did you use to reseal your coil or which forum did you explain it on?

I just re-epoxy it and hope for the best. I had one coil go bad 3-4 years ago but have been lucky since.
