a program called Passport in Time? Its a volunteer program through the U.S. Forestry service whereas volunteers are needed in various areas to work with archaeologists in projects accross the country. They sometimes need Metal Detectorists to help with these projects varying from excavations to finding ancient wagon trails etc. They have a state by state listing of active upcoming projects that you can apply for online. I think its a great opportunity to help preserve history and learn a lot to boot. Camping is usually available close to the sites at discounted rates, as well as, I believe, hotel and motel accomidations. I just applied for one here in Ms. for a week in October working the Gopher Nation Path. Last year at this site, 67 1 by 1 meter excavation were worked that yeilded 12000 artifacts. This year they will procede to work 60 to 70 more. Hope I get chosen! You can go there an check it out at www.passportintime.com. Check it out. Thought it was pretty neat. They sent me a magazine last week thanks to my new friend at the Wiggins Ms forestry station.
