HELLO TO EVERYONE, Newbie needs Delta help!

Hello to everyone here on Tek forum. I have been learning from the post's here for about 3 years. Sorry for not introducing myself sooner, but being a newbie I don't have nothing to contribute compared to most of you guys. This site has helped me very much, I have a Delta, been using and learning it for a little over 2 yrs. Anytime I ran into a problem or just puzzled over a certain issue I could find help searching old posts. MAN I'M GLAD I RAN ACROSS THIS SITE!!! I just got a 11dd f5 coil. I have had a couple short hunts, I think it will be Sweet after I learn to pinpoint better with it.I was checking different coins for comparison to the 8" concentric. When I scan a silver dollar it freezes I can continue to scan the dollar again it remains frozen for upto 30 or 40 seconds. When it starts working if I try to scan it again its instantly frozen or seems to not detect the coin at all. It will scan a clad 1.00 [Eisenhower] just fine at99. I noticed in comparison to the 8'' coil, silver coins showed a slight increase in ID over clad which is great. The 8'' always showed the same id for both. I thought it may be like raparound , rusty iron hitting as hi coin.somehow in reverse where id trying to hit low iron number. So I disc. to 10 [lowest setting on Delta] no difference. In A1 scans silver 1.00 as 99. A2 instantly freezes just like in disc mode. I really like my Delta and the new coil seems really good upgrade. But I hope someday to get lucky enough to dig a silver dollar, now I could walk right over one and never know it. PLEASE if anyone with a delta and 11dd could scan a silver $1.00 and a clad $1.00 and let me know the results I would really appreciate it. Sensitivity and volume settings made no difference on my Delta.

I understand, but like I said in my first post when someone asked a question on delta I never felt qualified to answer anything when guys like Monte and David J. are on this forum. I am just learning md'ing, this being my first detector.Questions about coils I can't answer because I only had the 8" until recently. Also when someone asks is it a good detector I have no experience with other models to compare to.I'm 50yrs old and this is the 3rd time I ever typed anything. I dont twitter, facebook ,text or none of the social media that seems so popular now. I just thought since this issue had not been in old posts, someone else with Delta & 11"dd could check theirs. My detector may have some kind of malfunction causing this freeze on a $1.00. I checked my detector settings and when I lower volume settings it does not freeze as bad as I stated in my first post, I always hunt vol. on 10 like Monte and others said in old posts being best setting. I keep sens. up 10-11 most of time. I had put 2 small dots I cut from a decal on the 11"coil trying to aid in pinpointing.I checked and the decal had something metallic in it.{I should have known better}.this lowering ids slightly.I removed the decals and now a clad {Eishenhower} $100 causes same reaction as a silver dollar, all though not as bad. At least if someone else notices this with their Delta while hunting, it may help them be aware. I have had fun learning with my Delta. I have not found anything but clad,so I had not posted any finds and introduced myself on here before. So anyhow, thanks

I don't own a Delta, but I do have an Omega along with other detectors.
Is it possible that with this large coin and it close to the coil that the detector is going into "Overload"?
Does it still do this if you increase the distance between the coil and the coin?

If it doesn't then its just sensing a large close to the coil overload, if it does it at any detectable range then I have no idea?

Mark

Thanks Mark I really appreciate you taking time to share your thoughts on this, I have read many of your old posts ,many of them have been helpful to me and I'm sure have helped many others that you are not even aware of. I'm familiar with the overload signal that my detector does when to close to large object. This is different, coil does not have to be close. When I swipe coin I get one beep {sometimes like a quick partial beep} display freezes and moving the coil back and forth over the coin does not signal again. It will stay frozen for quite a while. I can just lift detector wait for it to reset or whatever its doing then as soon as it is close enough to detect the coin its instantly froze again. If I was hunting and get a quick beep that does not repeat {while it is in its frozen state} I would just assume its a trash target and not even know that perhaps target did not repeat because detectors fr ooze.I know this is strange ,I kind of thought like you that its large signal, but 2 or more $1.00's or a handful of change the detector works fine. If I lay a dime beside the 1.00 it works fine.Sometimes when I'm hunting it freezes like a stutter, usually very brief I just figured its EMI, wifi, cel phone something along these lines that I have read so many have had problems with also.I was out in my yard trying to practice pinpointing with the dd earlier today and it seems to be getting worse.I will have to go back to my 8" coil I guess. I really do want you to know I thank you for your response. [ also this is not the id remaining on display until next signal like it does normally]

Could have got a bad coil? I have the Omega, but don't now if a F 5 coil is compatible with the Greek series detectors? I think it might be, but others will know for sure. Lastly, call Felix at First Texas and explain to him what is occurring. Good luck! HH jim tn

Thanks Jim for your thoughts also, Yea I was thinking some of the old posts of Dave J.'s stated f5, greek series compatible but I may have misread something. I was trying to save a few pennies when I ordered the f5dd so if its the wrong coil I can't blame no one but myself. I have read many of your post's I like checking out your finds that you post. I always think MAN that guys LUCKY, I regret not introducing myself on here much earlier like I should have so that I could tell ya, MAN I"M JEALOUS, GREAT FINDS! I'll get something figured out on this. I was looking forward to having a little more depth and perhaps get to dig a little silver. thanks for the response.

I bought a 5" DD F5 coil for my Omega and it works.

Thanks again, I'm glad to know for sure that the f5dd's are compatible. I was pretty sure dd's are interchangeable but not the concentrics. This was a tough choice trying to decide between the 5" and 11". I was looking through some more old posts and someone else had a freeze issue with Delta. This forum has been my reference, I normally would wait several months before returning to site and searching old post for something pertaining to a certain issue I would be having trouble with. So some of the Delta stuff that I found was old when I read them otherwise I would for sure responded to them. I now am wandering if person having that issue was using DD coil. Anyhow I'm headed for an old coalcamp today maybe I'll get lucky. 2 wks. ago I found a coal script token. I was some kind of happy, that is the only thing other than clad I have found. So again thanks to you guys, for helping.

Mike,

I would do as jim tn suggested in his post March 8 and call First Texas. I know it's more fun to sort out a problem with the members here on findmall.com, but I was just using the Kellyco Comparison Chart, comparing the Delta and the Fisher F5 detector specifications and these two machines have some differences.

First, I would ask Felix if the f5 11" DD Elliptical coil can be used on the Delta and if he says "Yes" without reservation, then go into your problem and see what he says about that.

Thanks Todd, I took my Delta on a hunt yesterday with 11"dd on it. When I turned it on, everything seems fine ,within 10 min. every time I get a hi tone hit, detector now freezes. I went back to my truck and swapped my 8"concentric. I was sure that it was coil, within few minutes same thing. I spent 3 hrs trying to hunt with a detector that freezes just about every hi tone, hold coil in air wait, try getting close to original beep, freeze and repeat until pinpointed. I have used my Delta enough that I was finally getting past spending my time wandering why I am digging trash mostly, to now having confidence in Delta and myself. I think this must be the make or break period for new md'ers, so instead of spending time frustrated, hunting was becoming fun. I know any problems has been user [me] not the Delta in my learning process.[not that I'm an old pro by no means]. This forum helped me decide on first detector, understanding what I see and hear compared to what I recover.Pros and cons of coil selection. MOST IMPORTANT everyone deals with pull tabs. [man its nice to not dig'em like I used to] so all of you guys here are a valuable resource, more than you know . So thanks to ALL of you here. I hope factory will fix my detector!!! After I got over yesterdays disappointment, I turned detector on and it seems fine! cold solder joint? or something has happened causing this reaction from EMI or something, I am truly puzzled. I am taking your advice Todd and going to contact First Texas, cross my fingers and hope for my old Delta back. So again thanks to ALL for the help.

Sent mine in ,told nothing wrong ,operates as it should. Nothing bad to say about customer service they even replaced my speaker which I had messed up {not a warranty issue] and put a rubber boot on coil wire connector. Since getting it back I hunted 2 or 3 times seems fine then Sunday Started again. But only brief than return to normal? Its useable and I'm not complaining. April has been my best month so far, hope to get a few finds posted soon, nothing special for the old pros on this forum, but my first gold ring, silver ring , 54 quarter,Kennedy half, Sac. dollar. I am using mine with no complaints. All I know is that it is not freezing like it was? I hope you have good luck with your Delta..
