HELP! Battery Troubles 9Volt and the OMEGA 8000

Alrighty, well I shipped off my Omega 8000 down to Texas a few weeks ago to get checked out, for a WARRANTY repair, as this is what happened during my last post back on July 6th......................................Everytime I swing the unit, sometimes it will beep upon a target, and sometimes it won't. Maybe 1 out of 6/7/8 sweeps will it beep and register a coin, a bullet, an iron casing, anything detectable. I thought it was the 11" inch DD coil, and put back on the stock 10" coil. That didn't help. I thought it was the batteries. That didn't help. It is like it can't detect anything deeper than about 2 or 3 INCHES AWAY and when it does detect something, it has to be litterally under the bullseye dot on the 11" inch DD coil. It can't find anything "on edge" or "anywhere else on the coil" past that magic center bullseye When I used it over the weekend looking for coins, it had to literally be "swept" under the middle bullseye of the coil.

Well I got a call from First Texas and they were supposed to ship back the Omega 8 days ago, which I haven't received yet, ughhh! Oh well, the person that I talked to was Hector Martinez, and he said that they had not found anything wrong with the unit to need any warranty work whatsoever HUH!??!?!?! I don't know how to phrase this, but something definitely happened and the unit was super slow in processing ever since.

So my question is this. What battery 9V do you use and have good success with on your unit? I purchased a multi pack of EVEREADY GOLD from LOWES. Stay away from these. I started noticing these problems with my metal detector since I have been using these batteries.

WHAT 9V BATTERY WORKS THE BEST, FOR YOU?

Thanks,
bubbadirect

I use the DuraCell and have had no problems, to my knowledge.

Sorry to hear of your machine's problems, and that is an odd problem to say the least

I use the Rayovac and Energizer brands with no problems

I doubt a particular brand of battery could be the problem though. They are pretty much all the same internally, 6 small cells stacked on top of one another. Some last longer, or claim to, but they all put out the same voltage

Keep us posted on the repair

I agree with you KEN! But I just can't figure out what else would have happened. Especially with the guys sending my unit back without an issue, or without any need of warranty repair.

Again, I only had this problem develop with these EVEREADY GOLD alkaline batteries that I will never use again.

I think I will stick to at least the RAYOVAC brand and better. I just started working at a BatteriesPLUS store up here so I will be able to try some different batteries.

When you have come to a conclusion about the batteries, let us know your opinion.

But your detector is not acting right. There must be something wrong, somewhere.

Intermittent problems with electronics can be some of the most trying ones to solve

I have no doubt that the factory fully tested the machine and could not find any problem. It could have "adjusted" itself in the shipping process

If you could look at one of these modern circuit boards under a good magnifying glass, you would be amazed at all the soldered joints. Granted , they are done by machines now, and are very reliable, but just one weak solder joint could cause problems. The individual components, resistors/diodes/caps are so tiny that it would take a very steady hand to place them in position

Hopefully it will be fine when you receive it and you will get many years of service from it

Something has went screwy inside the detector ...Not a coil problem but a component has fizzed out... I had a first run Omega and it would Flash all the time on the display like a 60 cycle neon light fixing to blow??? Batteries would not help it... sent it back for a refund it would of probably went eventually

Good luck with it I'm sure it's just a simple fix..

Hey Keith, I think you are right about the previous line in that post of yours talking about batteries and them NOT BEING THE ISSUE WITH MY MACHINE. But still I am scratching my balding head thinking hmmm... You did mention this in another post too. You said Also if you sweat alot you could of corroded the board inside the audio box if your's lack's weather proofing?? Just a thought..

Do you really think that could be it? Surely First Texas would have noticed that and fixed it if that was the case! RIGHT?!!?!?!?!? Man, I wish I could ask Dave JOHNSON if his warranty folks at First Texas would "catch" that.??? What do you think?

HEY KEN IN NC AND KEITH SOUTHERN... I just called Hector Martinez to check on the status of my unit and he said that after I had talked to him 10 days ago (where he reported nothing wrong with the unit), HE said that his warranty guys DID NOTICE A BAD SOLDER JOB, so they fixed it and shipped it back FedEx ground on Friday, so I will know something very soon.

You guys are right (hopefully) that it is not a "BATTERY ISSUE" thing but an internal electronic thing.

But still, it sure sounded and acted suspicious when I put in those Eveready Gold batteries. Ugh.

I will let you know how it goes when I get back the unit. Stay tuned!

bubbadirect,

I am still tuned in. What happened?

well otlew--I got the detector yesterday, but havent had a chance to try it out to make sure that it "works properly" yet, but hopefully will get out this weekend!

Yep. Me too. I use a couple of Uniross 200 mAh. Ni-Mh No problems.
I change the Batt. when it hits 2 bars to keep the Omega working well. ( i have one in and one spare ).
Good Depth ( 7" average on coins ).
