Hey all I finally got a Fisher f70 and I went and did a little diggin in the back yard 4 holes later this is what I ended up with a clad and a washer lol I was having a lot of trouble with the chatter til my last whole which was telling me there was a quarter or dime in the area I dug out a nice spot and searched and nothing I hit it with another sweep and was coming back as something zinc now all in all I was tired so I stopped searching.. I was wonder am I doing anything wrong can trash or interference show up as dimes and quarters then disappear? Does anyone have any suggestions on settings Im pretty sure I was getting interference It was jumping around at times right now Im running in disc mode eliminating iron / foil - Speed=SL Sensitivity=60 threshold= -2 #of tones=f2 My next try out I think Im going to try a beach most likely jones beach I figure might not be as bad on the beach I dont mind the cold but I would like to get the machine a little more down pack before I head out there....

Yes! sometimes when you dig in the area and move them (the target) or disturb them that can change the reading. The idea is once you determine your going to dig the item is to retrieve it and yes sometimes they can be hard to find, many of us now use a pinpointer like a Garrett propointer this help to quickly locate the item after you start the dig.

Being you just got the detector you may still be having a little trouble in the area of pinpointing, you will get better at that.

The chatter is also hard to deal with if your a new user to the machine, so its best to start off with reduced setting until you get use to the detector and know its sounds better, the chatter adds to the confusion.

Welcome! :clapping:

Theres a bunch of us that swing the 70...for general park hunting we run pretty light sens, like 50 or below even, clear down to the low 30's sometimes...it tightens up the size of the target and helps reduce a lot of chatter...you may want to try the DP tones or at least 3 or 4...you can fly with the thing and totally hunt by ear after a short while..the proportional audio signal is great for letting you know how big and how deep something like a coin is...on the beach, you will most definitely want to hear some of the iron and all of the foil...It is killer on the beach/open fields since its so light and strong, you can swing wide and fast and really cover some real estate....the thing has so much power, that unless you are hunting very clean dirt/sand, you gotta drop sens to run stable. Hunting a back yard or anywhere theres a lot of trash/electricity you gotta run light sens...dont worry about it though, it will still hit good and hard if anything worth while is there.

Thank you thank for the info as soon as the weather goes back up a lil Im gonna try that as well!

#1> Congratulations on the purchase of a very nice detector.

keep this in mind when detecting ..you will not be disappointed if you do.

A Metal detector detects metal objects. In our case metal objects in the ground. All Objects made of metal.
A discriminator can and does take out some objects. NOT all to be honest.

The detector will see some items as a desired target that are not what we wanted to dig, or even what we thought they were while looking and listening to the detectors beep, and meter for viewing.

For example many pull tabs will read as high coins on all Fisher units. These are the older deeper tabs made in the 60's.. Your machine will read as a dime and sometimes as a quarter.

Deep cans will read as a coin and show a shallow depth 5 or 6" and in fact it can be a 12" Pepsi or Bud can.

Nickle reading s can be can slaw and or a variety of pulltabs made from the 70's and up.. Iron can and read as good targets in many instances..

That said with practice you will learn how to judge the good from the bad.......... You will learn exactly what some of the good stuff sounds like, and views as on the meter.

The only sure way is dig it all.to find awesome items....Yep dig it all !!. I'm not so I set the discriminator to take out iron and most pull tabs.. Notice I said most..

Set up some sample items and space them apart and see what they read as and sound like.. As you practice you will get better. It sort of sounds like you were frustrated the first time out. I know like all of us you expected Gold and Silver every where you got a target.. Well you now know better. It's there my friend you just have to be in the right location, learn your machine, and detect the areas .... where stuff is.

It's a great fun hobby............. some days you find the goods. Some days you find the junk.. It's still fun... Remember you will get better as you go.......

Hey Godric, I was having the exact same problem when I got my new F70 in late 2012. Turned out I sent it in to Fisher and they tested it and replaced the 11" DD coil with a new one. It still seemed to be hyper but not nearly so bad. Then I followed Mud's advice on settings and she quieted right down and I began finding stuff. Even with the noise I was finding coin but the incessant noise was very distracting. If you Disc foil you will miss Gold jewelry, which read in the 17-25 range, Yeah, I know, that suck. But, I did pick a gold ring with a 2 Ct ruby surrounded by 6 small diamond, but I have dug up a 200 tabs and pieces of aluminum. Disc = 17 Sens = 50 Thes = -3 Tones = 3 and 3H -- and de mode - occasionally I will go to the SL, it does read deeper and that is when you will start finding old rusty nails that for some reason give a pretty good reading down past the 9" mark. I have dug some pretty deep holes in the SL mode but have yet to find the silver or gold and digging such deep holes really slow the searching down. For the SL mode I think you need a shovel and be digging where you will not draw a lot of attention, or get fined for defacing public property. My plan is to find all I can in the de (default setting) and when I am satisfied I have cleaned an area out then to go back in the SL setting and go slow. The settings I have given you is at a ground reading of 79 give or take a few, but this should quiet your machine down and you will find stuff, lots of stuff, and deep too, well, as deep as you need to dig. I have found dimes at 8" using these settings. Funny, while I have found a lot of bottle caps I have never found a bottle cap below 4", but I have found the old round pull tabs at that depth. Hope this helps. If you happen to live in my area, northern California, then everything I just told you is a lie -- :pinnochio
