Help identifying this possible military button!!

Found this button chasing the earliest map for my area in western New York (1857) but have found way earlier buttons and coins. I can make out an 8 and the word state but the rest of it is just to toasted to make out. And can't make out the backmark besides a few letters. Thinking it's military but can't find anything close matching. Any help would be awesome! H.H.!!!

Most military buttons that I'm aware of have an eagle on them, with the exceptions being unit specific buttons that typically had symbols in their centers (like crossed cannons for example).
I suspect that what you have may be something more like a fire brigade button, where the specific station might have had a number in the center, but that's strictly a guess on my part.
