Help me get started!

Detect This

New member
Hello,

I'm new to the whole detecting thing, but I've always wanted to do it. I need a little help finding a detector. I live in North Carolina and there are a lot of historical places and parks around here I want to scope out. I'm looking for something that will help me find coins and jewelry. Since I live in the mountains I would also like to search for gold nuggets along the stream banks and such. Is there a detector that can handle both of those things? I was looking at either an ACE 250 or a used GTI 1500. Let me know what you guys think. When I get started I will be sure to post my finds. I look forward to it!

Peace,

Hay DT, probably the 1500 for all your wanting to do...I have the Ace 250 and it's a great little tector. But I don't think it's geared up for gold...I'll bet you some of the more seasoned hunters on here can tell you more. Welcome aboard and HH to ya!

If you're going to hunt for nuggets you need a detector geared for just that. The average hobby detector is not set up for it so I would consider the Scorpion as it works equally as well for coins, jewelry, relics, as it does for gold nuggets. And it is hot on rings, especially gold rings. If it wasn't for the nugget hunting any other machine would suit you well.
If you were going to just hunt for coins and such I would highly recommend the 250 to start out with as I'm hesitant to recommend a detector with a stiff learning curve to a newbie as they can prove difficult to learn and highly frustrating to the user.. Detecting is not as easy as it looks or sounds and requires a lot of patience and knowledge to master. So you might think about whether you want to start out with a detector with a stiff learning curve rather than one you can learn much easier then move up to a higher end machine. Good luck in your choice and welcome to our forum where a lot of help is available which you will be needing.

The Scorpion seems to be what I'm looking for, but I've read it has a steep learning curve. Can anyone on here tell me more about it please?

When I was looking for my first detector I went to metaldetectorreviews.net. It helped me decide . I got the ace250 but I only hunt for coins, jewelry, junk. well I dont intentionally hunt for junk,it just seems to find me;) down the road I may consider the scorpion, I've heard some pretty good things about them. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE A BALL!!!

Welcome to the forum. I'm new to detecting, and new to this forum too. There are many good metal detecting machines out there. I bought a mid-range machine (gtax 550) for two reasons: I didn't want to be frustrated the the cheapest machine I could get, and I didn't want to spend 1500 bucks on a new hobby I knew nothing about. I am totally thrilled with this thing...I found another Indian head penny 1904 tonight. That's 3 Indians now...one per night for the last 3 nights I went out hunting. Not to mention all the wheaties and clad I dug up in those 3 nights.

I think that whatever detector you get, you need PATIENCE...just like Uncle Willy says. I was told it would take around 100 hrs to start to understand what my machine was telling me. Take your time and I promise--you will find stuff!

I don't know what they are asking for the used 1500, but if the price is right,
I'd go for it. The 250 is a good machine, but the 1500 should be a bit better.
But if that falls through, I wouldn't be afraid to go with a 250. That's what I've
been using.

I started as have many with the ACE250 and still love it
I also use the GTI1500 If the GTI is reasonable Id
get it ...

Welcome to the forum and happpy hunts

Scorpion or Infinium as these are the only dedicated gold nugget detectors. Maybe start out with the Scorp and move up to the Infinium at a later date. Just my $.02:wiggle:
Best of luck to ya whichever machine you decide to get. Happy Hunting!:)

The Scorpion is probably the best advice as it still reasonably priced for a gold machine.

Is there a "history" of finding gold in the mountains where you live? Always want to go where
gold has been found before.

Good Luck to you.

I'm with Uncle Willy on the Scorpion. It has excellent diversity and value for the investment. With anything there's always going to be a learning curve however theres not much else out there that hopefully pays you for the amount of enjoyment and happiness you'll experience while pairing up with this hobby. Pound for Pound the Scorp is the best deal around. Take my suggestion anyway you see fit and if your patient to choose the right machine ask John edmonton when he gets back from his trip. From what I've read Uncle willy and Jhon are the GURU'S on this forum

I'm actually heading down to where KellyCo is located in a few days. I think I will pay them a visit and test out the detectors.
