What mode are you hunting in? Pinpointing with the 250 takes practice. Check the archives on this forum for many tips on pinpointing plus there is a video or two on the procedure.

A couple of things:

1.Just because you check the hole and don't find your target doesn't mean its not there.
This is why a hand held pinpointer is VERY useful. Many times the target blends in with the color of
the dirt making it difficult to see. Other times the target is still buried in the SIDE of the hole you dug.
You may have to widen the hole a bit to find it. DOn't forget to run your coil over the pile of
dirt you dug from the hole. The target may be there.

2.To avoid false signals turn your Ace sensitivity down to about 4 bars or lower if you have
a lot of black sand. The Ace does not do well in wet sand. Dry sand is usually ok, I am told.

3. Pinpointing is hard for some people but easy for others. I have no problem pinpointing with
the Ace. When you have centered your target on the VID screen, the target is for me, always directly under
and dead cented of the coil. With your eyes, follow the length of the rod to where it connects with the coil.
If you have centered the target properly the target will always be directly under the coil where it connects with
the rod. That has been my experience so far.

Practice, practice, practice. You'll get the hang of it.:)-)

Hi Artp40, it sounds like your searching and finding targets, then having problems when localizing/pinpointing? Yes? If so it may be that you are engaging the pinpoint function directly over the target. When pinpointing you want to trigger/engage the pinpoint function off and away from the target, then sweep over the target to localize. Triggering the pinpoint function directly over the target will detune the detector! If your just starting out this should be avoided. Scan a area to practice over in the all metal/no disc mode, make sure there is no target in a 1 yard/meter square. Put down your euro, or other coin - then sweep the target. Move the coil off to the side of your test target, then engage Pinpoint and see where under the coil you get your best reading. Some coil types (DD) will pinpoint best at the front tip of the coil, while concentric coils will PP directly under the center.

Hang in there,
Square Nail

Interesting what you say about "detuneing." As of yet I have not had to do that but I understand
the principle behind what your saying and tried it a couple times. It will be
a good tool if I ever need to use it.:)-)

Hi artp40, I probably didn't use the best choice of words when I made the post. Detuning the detector is quite in-accurate, when engaging pinpointing directly over the target the detector temporarily nulls the signal. If the search coil is directly centered over the target this null is optimized and the target appears to vanish. When the pinpoint button is release and normal search Ops continue, the detector isn't detuned. The effect is only temporary when pinpointing. Sorry if I caused confusion.

In addition to the listed ideas, I suggest you tape some of your coins to large plain pieces of cardboard. Scatter the cardboard with the coins face down. Now detect the coins on each of the pieces and mark the area you think the coin should be. Compare the mark to the actual coin location. This should help you realize the specific location that your particular detector/coil combination senses a shallow coin.

I have found the 250 to be extremely accurate on shallow coins by centering the coin using pinpoint mode, drawing the detector back toward you until the signal falls and digging under the inside edge of the inside coil. I think John Edmonton originally posted the center and draw method. Works for me on shallow stuff and I'm too lazy to dig very deep :) .

Best of luck, you bought a good general purpose detector. Garrett makes good stuff!
