Help needed! Chattering on pinpoint any ideas why

I have an explorer 2 which has started to chatter really badly on pinpoint, it also howls when i put the detector down.
It does the same on all of my coils, i've re-set it , turned the sensitivity down to no effect and the battery connectors seem ok and am at a loss as to the cause has anyone got any ideas?
.

I too have the same problems in pinpoint, and tend not to use it very often.I saw on a video clip the edge of the coil being used, but I still get the same results.

I had something like that happen the other day. I turned off everything, unpluged all cables and cleaned the coil and cover. I connected everything and turned it back on and no more problem.

Are you using an X-1 probe? I get that howl after i pinpoint with it... then set it down while im digging. It starts getting louder... but thats normal VCO. Is the detector STILL in pinpoint when you set it down? You should turn it off once you pinpointed or the VCO gets louder.

Forgot to add.... the SE manual says "the detector may become noisy if pinpoint is enabled ABOVE a target. The detector may also become noisy if left in pinpoint. If the occurs return to normal detection, and try pinpoint again". So id say whats happening is normal you just have your coil on the target when you turn on pinpoint. Try Xing the target first or make sure your coil isnt ON the target when you turn on pinpoint.

Thanks for the suggestions folks, it has certainly helped turning pinpoint off when putting it down and i have cleaned the coil and re-connected everything. It did work a lot better when i tried it yesterday it could also have been a particularly trashy site i went to previously so your suggestions were all very helpful. After a while the threshold did start becoming intermittent along with the pinpoint again but that could be down to the overhead power lines close by i suppose.
I'll keep on it till i've sussed it ...good hunting
