Here is my first cleaning of a V-nikel that actually worked....

I used "the works" bathroom cleaner that someone suggested. It worked pretty good. At least it took the red crud off of the coin. This nickel was in pretty good shape before being cleaned.

Here it is after cleaning her up. Finally found something that will take the red stuff off and bring back the nickel look to it. I like it better this way. Lost a little detail but that ok. What you guys think?

Using The Works on a Q Tip. It removed the rust and the dirt and doesn't look bad at all. I put some cooking oil on it afterwards. The scan makes it look darker than it is. The horn is still full after the bath. Not sure if I want to soak it in the stuff for a period of time tho. It appears to be a very strong base substance and highly corrosive. Opinions?????

hydrochloric acid, which is what's in battery acit i think. definitely not a base... powerful stuff - in fact i'm surprised they haven't banned it or something. it'll eat about anything.

How long if you did soak it? That V looks real nice after cleaning.
I have used bar keepers helper which is a cleanser like comet. It has a weak acid plus the abrasive. I use to scrub the crap out of my nickels with that and a toothbrush, it would eventually make them look "silver" again. Had to do a scrub with dish soap also to get the final red off. Seemed like too much work so I just leave them alone now.
