G'day Mick.
I thought that some of the more experienced Explorer uses may have been able to help you here.
I bought an XS Explorer about 6 weeks back. I only just starting to get out with it. I've only used it a handful of times and although I was a little annoyed with some of it's display features at first, I'm starting to quite like it. It seems that the general consensus, is that it isn't that much different from the current model. It's 2 ounces heavier, it has a slower recovery speed and the only thing that it lacks from the later models, is that it only shows it's digital display numbers as a single pair of numbers as opposed to the later models that display 2 sets of numbers. It does however show that same 2 sets of numbers in a different format by way of the smart find screen (which is on the later models as well) Something that I did last night in order to get the best out of the smart find screen, was to put a clear bit of plastic over the display and waived all the coins that I wanted to find, over the coil. I then marked where the cross hairs showed up on the screen for each target. It worked a treat today in that most items I pulled up, were coins, with only 3 non coin targets fooling me. I was very impressed. I'll post about that more in the morning under a separate post (with photo's).
Both the pinpoint mode and depth metre, are a waist of space. That said, accurate pinpointing can still be effectively achieved by Xing over the target using the centre line of the coil (very effective).
Price wise, buy it if it is somewhat cheaper than the Explorer II or SE, if it's close to the same price range though, then buy one of the later models.
