how do you like the 4.5x7 coil

I have been using this coils and have had some good and not so good results. I am wondering how everyone else likes theirs. I have been reading the forum to get an understanding how I should us this coil. My sensitivity is set at 31 with the recovery on deep.All else is factory preset. I am thinking on going back to using my 10.5 coil that can with my explorer II se. thanks
 
I can tell you one thing, using 31 for your Sensitivity could be Overkill. You never stated what kind of ground you are working in but I do know that if you run the Sensitivity too High, that you will lose depth. And you may have better results if you try switching back and forth from Semi-Auto to Manual Sensitivity just to see how the machine acts and to see if you gain or lose depth on a target. obviously isn't going to get the depth of the stock coil. It is a killer in the trash though and will still hit a dime for me at 7". I can run the sens at about 30 with no falsing.
 
I just started using the 4.5x7 coil and it is great in trashy areas. I hunt in all metal so I get lots of iron readings but it is easy to separate the good targets from the trash using the small coil. "Tinfoil" Jerry, is letting me use his 4.5x7 coil until I order mine. I called Kelly Co. to get one and they were out of stock but recommended the new 6" DD coil that is coming out. It was tested on the Explorer SE which is what I have. So that is what I am ordering when it comes in. They said it should be in in about another week. I might end up having to get both coils if I get too use to using the 4" coil.

Actually James, the 4.5 x 7 is incredibly stable at high sensitivity even in tough ground. Most places I can run mine at 32 with now problems. And that includes places where I can't run over 24 with the stock coil. It's amazing. And it gets great depth at those settings as well.
 
So if you are runing high sensitivity in tough ground how do you know when missed a target due to too much sensitivity?
 
How much of the yard dig you get dug up :rofl:. I think you need to get Chris out there to dig for you. Hope you are enjoying the 7.5" round DD I brought over to you . HH Jerry aka Tinfoil.
 
I don't know what I was thinking. Tinfoil is right. I am using the 7.5" coil not the 4.5x7 coil. I promise I am not blond! I have used the 4" coil on other detectors but not the SE. The SE is unlike any detector I have ever used. I love it so far! I am going to get out this week and do some detecting. Tinfoil, give me a call if you want to do some hunting. I am going back to that school tomorrow were I found that Buffalo nickle and ring and hunt since school is out for spring brake.

PS. Tinfoil, I still haven't hunted out my yard yet. I found a quarter and two dimes after you left later that day and I found several more zinc penny targets that I haven't dug yet. Still learning all the different tones.
 
So if you are running LOW sensitivity in tought ground, how do you know when you missed a good target because you could have been running it a little HOTTER???

Look, I'm one of the original proponents of the "less is more" concept on sensitivity, often telling folks here to "throttle it back" once in a while. I have the 12.5" Excel coil, the 10.5 SE stock coil, the 5" round Excel, and the 4.5 x 7. The 4.5 x 7 is different than the rest. You can max it out without it being "too much" It's not even CLOSE to being unstable at 32 in most spots and in the worst of spots you can do 30 with it. The big thing is the design and the narrow footprint...it likes the sensitivy higher.

I have a test garden in my backyard that is in tough ground, with apower line back there as well. I have proven on numerous targets that if I run at 18 to 20 with the stock or 12.5" coils I can hit all the targets out there. If I run it at 22 I start to lose some of them. At 24 and above, MOST of them are gone. With the 4.5 x 7 I can crank it up to 30 back there and get most of them. The couple I can't are too deep...like 10" or more. The coil is VERY stable.

Down and see JW and get that new Excellerator 10x14" coil. I haven't seen JW in about 2 years. The coil should work great on that black sand beach I hunt. Ain't it about time for you to go back beach hunting??? :D: :D: HH Mike. Jerry aka Tinfoil
 
Thats what I wanted to know. I have that little coil and now realized that all these years I have ran the XS too high on the sensitivity most of the time. Reecently I was told to ground balance with sensitivity just like you would an old whites unit. No change in sound up and down. Around here sensitivity has to be 5 to get it to do that, and to think how many hours were spent running in 20's in manual with the 10.5. Must be karma. Confession is good for the soul they say. Just ordered some inner loop NiMH batteries that will hold 85% shelf life charge for one year and take UP TOO ???? 1000 charges??? Thats what they are saying anyway.

Yeah, it's gettin' close...like about the end of May. That's when it starts picking up nicely.

I'm getting one of those 10 x 14's, for sure. It looks to be the hot ticket for beach and field alike!

They are Sanyo ENELOOP , I think. Ugene says they get good run time
I put a set in The Tejon and they work great. Time will tell about the longevity. I forget to keep the NiMH's recharged during off season and have wasted a few sets in the past, this should solve that peoblem.
