How far to dig down!

Hawkeye1434

Hello all i am new to not only this forum but metal detecting and i am hooked. I am sure most of you already know this but for the rest of us newbies when the metal detector says the object is 4 inches deep dont forget your holding the detector 2-3 inches above the ground and the coin will only be one to two inches down or closer to the surface. I learned the hard way after digging for a 2005 penny (my first find!!!!!! in my subdivision front yard) for over a half hour i was sweaty and a mess but i loved every second of it and thought i would pass my new found wisdom to my fellow newbies so their digs would be more productive. Also use your pinpointer it makes things a thousand times easier!! happy hunting and may all your finds be seated or better!

Welcome to the forum Hawkeye.
That's a great point that a lot of newbies can fall into. Another big thing new folks do, is swing their coil up at the end of each pass which can cause the detector to give a false signal.
I'm glad to see you are enjoying yourself. It doesn't take much for the hobby to get under your skin.
All the best,
Mick Evans.

Hi mate and welcome, I fairly new to this also and had similar teething issues. You do get hooked quickly and you know you are when you can't sleep the night before a hunt dreaming of predecimal coins and rings like the one Terra dug up recently. Enjoy the forum and your new hobby. Aaron
