How is the 10" Elliptical coil on Vaquero?

So i've been wanting to get this coil for awhile and have been trying to find reasons to justify the purchase. I've asked some questions on it before, but thought I would give it some more time to see if anyone had anymore opinions on it. Right now I have the stock coil and the 5.75 concentric... so for you guys that have tried it on the Vaquero, how is the depth compared to the stock coil and how is the target separation compared to the 5.75? is it worth the purchase?

Hi bobby. The elliptical coil is a all terrain type coil.Like,i may have a chance to go to a mountain region for a hunt. But the ground is harsh with minerals.I have a great coil to cut it.Or if you want trash separation. It don't get much better than this.A DD coil has superior trash seperation abilit's .I like the light solid shape to hunt in the brush. But i would just as well would rather have the 8" doughnut coil for the woods. If you have any bad ground,or may get over some bad ground, this would be a good investment. The vaq,and the elliptical can be a nice gold detector.

Thanks for the info, it really helps. I think you said before that the coil is killer on silver correct?

Not a killer on silver any more than another coil. It has better sweep coverage than a concentric but not as much depth (unless you are in high mineralization soil).
Its a great coin and jewelry coil as well as nugget hunter.
The 5x10 DD falses easier on bad targets but I like that aspect because I tend to sweep a bit fast in sports fields and will catch the deeper targets for me to re-evaluate.
Re-scanning the iffy targets will either disc out or your detector will repeat the signal. Those are the iffy targets I dig.
Mind you I dig at least 80-100 targets in 2hrs so I am moving fairtly quick and not shooting for deep targets although I do pull some deeper coins from time to time.
Bottom line, I wouldn't use it for deep coin or relic hunting, but small shallow targets to 6 inches it is great and gets good coverage.
It can also get in areas a round coil can't go. A compromise between a concentric and clean sweep I suppose.
It has been on my Vaquero for a couple years now.

This is exactly the type of hunting that I am getting a GB modded Cibola geared up to do. I decided to go with the 12x10 DD - I already know that I can swing a coil with that weight for at least 2 hours without a break and I want to keep my recovery rate in numbers similar to yours. My plan had been to run the sensitivity down to 5-7 in order to keep the targets on the shallower side since even coverage down to 6" is all I really want while having little or no coil overlap.

Anyhow, have you tried the bigger coil? Just asking because if so I'd be interested in hearing why you downsized. I will probably end up with both the 12x10 and the 5x10, but currently I am in no rush to get the 5x10. I wanted the 5x10 for trashier sites.

Bobby, I like my 10" coil alot, but I still have not used as much as I would like to though. I think "tabman" is on to something with that new 8" doughnut coil he just got, which I think might be a better all around coil than the 10" coil. I love the 8" doughnut coil on my Sidewinder and now I am thinking about getting one for the V instead of the 5.75. Think I might try to trade the 10" for a 10x12 DD which suits my relic hunting better.

I already have a 5.75 concentric coil...would the 8" doughnut coil make that much a difference? I know tabman was getting a little more depth because because he cant have his sensitivity too high with the stock coil, but i can have my sensitivity pretty high...I gotta send my Vaquero to the factory anyways, so i'll prolly give Rusty a call and talk to him

If you have any minerals at all in the areas you hunt,a DD is the best choice.I have neutral soil but still like the DD search pattern. When you are searching at great depth, remember with a concentric you may not be covering the ground that well. The deeper the targets the more you have to really sweep with a concentric because at the far end of the search coil the detection field may be the size of a half dollar. :O

very true..i do notice i have to slowww down sometimes to make a signal appear more clearly...it has found me some good stuff thats for sure

All in all i think Tesoro made a good choice for the stock 9x8 concentric. But i wish someone would tell me the reason why the 9x8 concentric is elliptical and not round?Maybe the field pattern can get between trash better?Tesoro does have a good selection of coils. You can't beat the 10x12 widescan for open areas. It is light and deep.It works great on the golden, for sweeping up the coins in a park. The concentric coil is the choice of Tesoro for the best all purpose coil. But i don't know if i totally agree with that.If they sold the detectors with a great DD coil.To me that would be more all purpose because people that have higher mineralized ground would have a better coil than the concentric. To me it is more fun hunting coins in the park with a DD.I like the sweep pattern of the signal .It is like i can nail coins quicker? :O

Yea, its tough to know which coil I need, if i really do need another one..but my interest is either the 10" elliptical or the 8" round doughnut coil

If you got good ground, the doughnut. This coil is raved about by all die hards. The vaq and a doughnut would be hard to beat i think. Not many,if any have tried the doughnut with the vaq and look how it did him first time out. Most here have not even thought about this coil until we started talking about it.The doughnut is the all time liked coil for the umax detectors,so you know it would be great on a hot detector. :O

I have the 12x10. Would only use it in clean areas if I ever use it again. It falses more than I like and has poor target seperation. I find it the most difficult to PP with of all the coils I have.
I can generally tell what size target and likely shape with the 5x10 elyptical. Pinpointing is a breeze. Ie, its quick, light, abd perfectly suited to the type of detecting I use the Vaquero for.
