How is the MXT in wet Salty sand?

ShawnP

I currently use a Fisher F4 which I have never gotten to work well in the wet sand, I love it in the dry sand an on land at parks etc.

I have gotten my wife hooked on detecting as well so we are going to be investing in a second detector early next year after we get our taxes back, but she keeps saying she wants one that will go down to the waters edge type thing Not underwater just coil wet type.

Anyway I was thinking of getting the Whites MXT as my second detector but I keep reading the reviews about how noisy of a detector it is and how sensitive it is because it was originally designed for nuggets but that over all it is a great mid line detector for both coins, small jewelry and relics.

I never seen anyone say one way or the other if the salty sand would just make this thing go crazy since its so sensitive and noisy to begin with.

Should we look at something like the Tigershark instead?

Are there any others I should research in your opinions?

We do not want something for the beach only, we still would like to hunt together in parks and on land.

Thanks

Shawn

I have used my MXt for 3 years at the beaches here on Cape Cod. I have found several nice rings , lots of clad and other jewelry items. I have had good luck with it in wet sand once I understood how to use it effectively. The trick is to ground balance it often as you go along by pumping the coil up and down over the wet sand a few times and not to use a lot of gain. After using it on the wet sand for a time I got to know when the gain was to high, it gets really noisy and falses with too much gain. I generally can run the gain at 7 on most beaches here. With a setting of 7 you can find items at about 6-8 inches deep in wet sand. If you think about it when you are in wet sand you are looking for recently dropped items and they are not going to be deep anyway. Be extremelty carefull near the waters edge, if it gets wet it will be ruined.
This year I purchased a water proof pi detector because I wanted to wade into the water and not worry about the detector getting ruined. It is the way to go if you hunt beaches all the time, like I do in the summmer. But like I said I have had great results with the MXT in both dry and wet sand. After learning it you should do fine.

Hope I helped a bit.

Larry and I went to Mexico beaches and I use the MXT. I didn't have any problems what so ever with it being noisy. Ground balance and then put it in salt mode. I retrieved many nice coins, etc. and also got the coil wet. Just don't get it wet and then raise it up or you'll get water in the main unit. My vote would be for the MXT in my humble oppinion.

Thanks guys. I still have some time before I have to decide but the MXT is still at the top of the list.

Hi, I'm a newbie here but i've had an MXT for about 4 mo. now. I have used it on the Gold Coast of FL (near and No. of Ft. Pierce) 2/3 times on the beach and it's not been noisy for me either. Putting it in the salt mode and then G/balance and finding a lot of clad and a lot of trash. Also, I use the KellyCo 3.5X5" Excellerator Pro II coil if I get into a lot of trash, Otherwise I use the 950 coil. Tho the 950 isn't is easy for me to use anywhere I also use my BE II pinpointer with great success. I now have a pint jar almost full of clad, a few tokens, and 1 Sajaquea(sp) copper dollar. I'm 73 and I really get a lot of good exercise and getting out with my MXT. Also hope to find some of that Spanish GOLD at the beach too. Thanks and HH. olegator
