How well do PI detectors in freshwater?

I am planning to buy a PI system for clayish soils and the whites mxt to hunt gold nuggets and coins but since I spend a lot of time in both salt and fresh water will I also need something like a cz-20 or excaliber?
To bad the mxt is not waterproof because I can't afford three units.

The PI will work fine in Freshwater just like it does in Saltwater. People usually opt for the Xcal or the CZ20 when they have to hunt areas where they will have a lot of iron to deal with. If you are happy working the Saltwater with a PI you should be happy using it in Freshwater.

Beachcomber,
Can you help me decide on a PI system?
I am debating over minelab, Goldquest ss, Aquastar and Fisher pulse 8x. Particularly the later two since they are amphibias.
I also want a VLF and would like your opinion on waterproofing a whites MXT or x5.
Would really appreciate your advice!
Thank you.

I already told this guy that the Fishers 8X is not a beach machine. I recommended the HH PI, but he seems to favor that 8X. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

The Minelab Excalibur is a multifrequency VLF not a PI. Of the PI's that you mentioned only the Aquastar and the JW Fisher Pulse 8x are waterproof. Of those two the Aquastar is by far the better choice for a beach or shallow water hunter. I used a JW Fisher Pulse 8x years ago. It was not good on small gold and it was heavy and unwieldy for beach hunting. THe Pulse 8X was designed for diving and for larger pieces of metal such as gold and silver bars not small gold rings. I believe that there will be a waterproof version of the Goldquest SS in the near future.
For freshwater either the MXT or the X-5 would be very capable if you waterproofed them. I have waded with the X-5 in Freshwater lakes and it did a very good job of finding gold chains, bracelets and gold earrings that other machines had left behind.
Hope this helps!

That was a big help Beachcomber
I should have mentioned that when I said Minelabe PI, I meant the GP extreme or maybe SD2200 since the extreme is a bit expensive for me and I don't think it is waterproof.
Thanks for your help.

You are right...neither the GP Extreme or the SD2200 are waterproof or even water resistant. Even the coils on those two units aren't waterproof!

jeff,
Just trying to get as much advice as possible before I spend my hard earned cash.
I have never wrote in this forum before yesterday but I think I remember you telling me in the southwestern nugget hunters forum "not to waste my money on a PI system because they make a person dig alot"--don't remember you saying anything about the beach. I like to dig for it keeps me young and fit and is good for uppercuts too, in fact I credit years of digging and of coarse Jesus Christ for my winning an ameteur heavy weight boxing championship in 2000--and doesn't digging aerate the soil. You are probably a good digger to but if not, maybe I have motivated you--just watch those tree roots, ok Jeff!
Getting off a tangent, I had given up on the 8x until last last friday when a salesman of kellyco insisted that the pulse 8x was the best machine they had for gold in tropical climates--and I was asking about the minelab extreme.
but we are talking freshwater diving now and if you recall, my neck of the woods also has alot of black sand and red clayey soil.

Here's what I said in the SW forum.
Jon... The Fishers 8X is designed strictly for UW use, and would not be practical for the beach. It's too heavy, and will not pick up small gold. My advice would be to get a DetectorPro HeadHunter PI for about $600. It will detect a nickel to 15", and is waterproof to 100 feet. Definitely the best value for the price!

he is talking about, get the Headhunter PI if you want to find small gold and need waterproof also. Easy to use, light and also much lower in price than the others you listed. I have one and also several other detectors and the Headhunter is a great beach detector, will even find 1/4" pieces of gold and other metals. Forget the Kellyco salesman. He probably never even used a detector, the Fisher 8 is no good on the beach and is no good on small items. That's another honest opinion for you. John in CT.
