How well does the 3b mode work in Iron Trash?

Mike Hillis

The 3b mode was designed as aid to help id trash targets like bottle caps and it does help. But there is a question as to how the 3b mode might inhibit the T2's ability to see through iron trash.

To quote Dave's recent email

quote:
What we don't know yet, is how much the 3b mode might impair "see-through" ability in iron trash. There is fragmentary evidence, both theoretical and based on field test reports, that there may be a slight amount of impairment. However, this system is entirely new and we don't have enough information yet to say whether the impairment really exists or not.

Probably the best way to determine it, would be to search an iron-trashy site in mode 3, and then switch to 3b on high-tone locates to see if they vanish or drop the tone, and then to dig to see what the target was. If coins stay high-tone, then 3b is okay for general use, but if coins drop, then 3b should be reserved for use only on sites where there are lots of bottle caps.

I'm hoping that some T2 users will try this out and report what they learn.

PS...I will post the bottle cap part of the email under the appropriate heading.
