How will the GT go in the Gold fields

madmax800

New member
I have been thinking about taking a week or so off work and heading to the Gold fields of Victoria Australia.
Has any 1 used the Sov GT in the gold fields. I am wondering how it will perform. I have standard 10"coil and need to know If the sov GT will be any good. I am open to suggestions about different coils etc.

Thanks all

If you can get a copy or back issues of Feb (yearbook 2006), March and April editions of Australian Gold Gem and Treasure magazine, then you will find 2 great articles written by B.T, about the GT.In the first 2 mentioned months, he did a general write up on who the GT performs in various situations, including some very mineralised ground on the Queensland Gold fields. He commented that the ground he was on, caused his GP3500 to groan. In this situation, the only way he could get the machine to run, was to put the sensitivity into auto mode and the detector worked fine. He picked up a few bullets as deep as 8 inches. He didn't imply what he was hunting.
In the April2006 edition, he took the GT to Taragulla (which is in the Victorian Golden Triangle) where he hunted for coins and relics. He had absolutely no problems with the Gt in this environment.
One other comment he made in the article; was that the GT has the same ground tracking system as the Eureka Gold. So it sounds like you will do fine.
As you have probably figured, I don't own a GT myself. I hope this info is of some use to you.

P.S. From what I've heard, The GT has trouble seeing gold nuggets that are less than a gram in size. Hopfully, someone can jump on here and can either confirm or deny whether this is in case the fact for you.

You could pretty well forget gram sized nuggets......

My GT with 12.5 Detech coil will only pick up a .22 airgun pellet to about 1". Thats a pure lead JSB Exact 16.0 grains....just over a gram.

Add in some coil height above the ground to dodge rocks, and it's easy to see that a low conductivity target this small is not a practical consideration.

I would think that if there are nuggets larger in weight than ordinary .22 cal bullets (40 grains) then it should find some.
