Hunt 8 at Ball Fields: Coin Spill and Large Cent

This place continues to surprise and amaze. First good find of the day was a 1851 Large Cent with a hole in the top (someone must have been wearing it as a chain). Cleaned it up in vinegar only so I could read the date. Next was the 1942 Mercury Dime. Nice shape. The big excitement for the day was a coin spill; two Standing Liberty Quarters (one no date, one 1925 in beautiful shape) and a 1904 V Nickel all attached together. The quarters cleaned up really well in vinegar while the V Nickel front is badly damaged, although I can read the date. My heart was pounding when that lot of coins popped out! Finished up the day with the silver religious medal (several of those at this site). Now up to 26 silver coins from this site. At this pace I will get to 100 from this site alone!

What is the history of these fields? Are they still in use or long ago abandoned? I hunt several parks here in TN that are not very old (opened in the 50's and 60's) most are still active parks and very easy pickins for clad and pennies but have never found silver in one. Looks like you have a nice spot!

The site first opened in 1888. It has always had a baseball field but in the early days it also had a wading pool and was near a canal (see picture). The wading pool was filled in and in the area another baseball field and a football field were added. I believe most of the older finds are in the area that was the wading pool or just next to it. The park is still in use today, 3 baseball fields, the football field, tennis courts and a younger children's playground. I haven't really searched the playground area and some of the areas to the sides of the baseball fields because there are so many hits/trash. I am going back tomorrow to try the 6x9 sef coil for the first time. I honestly don't believe the park has ever been searched by a modern detector. The town it is in has about 5 more parks of a similar age. I am always thinking that maybe I should try one of those next but given this park is still producing I haven't.

The gift that keeps on giving. Great finds, your on a roll.
